Logan spoke lightly. "Mrs. Perry keeps saying it’s for my own good, but Duke William has already buried five or six sons-in-law. And you still have the heart to send your one and only ’biological son’ into that death trap?"
Amelia froze, unable to answer, her eyes darting with guilt.
"T-then it must’ve just been bad luck for those men. They couldn’t handle such fortune—how can you blame Duke William or Miss Paula for that?"
Besides, if Logan died, all the better. That would just be his fate!
Daniel sighed, putting on the air of a benevolent father. "Logan, you and Miss Paula are a match made in heaven. You’re not even married yet—why worry about such things? Do you really think Duke William is some kind of ruthless killer? Those men died because they mistreated Miss Paula and brought disaster upon themselves. Now that Duke William and Miss Paula value you so highly, you ought to feel proud!"
"Logan, think of the Reid Family. Would you really let your own parents live the rest of their lives in sorrow?"
Logan’s lips curved in a half-smile. "If Duke William and Miss Paula are such a blessing, why not let Owen enjoy that fortune instead?"
"Owen could never endure such suffering!" Amelia shrieked before she even thought, her face twisted with fury. She turned on Logan, screaming,
"You heartless beast! Has the Reid Family ever denied you food or clothes? And still you’re this cruel? What more could you possibly be dissatisfied with—"
"How amusing, Mrs. Perry. If Owen marries Miss Paula, it’s ’suffering.’ But if Logan marries Miss Paula, it’s a ’blessing’? So tell me, do you actually look down on Logan, or do you look down on Miss Paula?"
The doors opened. Selina strolled in at an unhurried pace, a smile playing on her lips, brows arched, fanning the flames with relish.
"Duke William, just look—Mrs. Perry clearly doesn’t think much of your daughter~"
"Selina, shut up!" Panic flashed in Amelia’s eyes as she barked, "Owen can’t possibly marry her! Because... because... yes, because Owen isn’t my biological son!"
Amelia collapsed to the floor, wailing theatrically. "Logan, have mercy on us! Miss Paula is royalty. She’s chosen you—that’s your blessing! The royal family is not to be offended. And I already said, Miss Paula only wants a business alliance with my biological son. As my son, can you really bear to watch me die of heartbreak?!"
Selina blinked, glancing Amelia up and down. "Funny. Mrs. Perry’s voice is loud as a bell and her health looks excellent. I don’t see a single sign of dying from heartbreak."
Everyone: "..."
It was clear Amelia hadn’t meant it that way.
"Selina, you—"
"Amelia." Selina’s laugh was icy as she cut her off. "You say Logan is your son, so you want to send him off to ’enjoy’ such fortune. Then answer me this—what part of Logan looks like your biological son?"
"You abandoned him as a child in the freezing snow, never caring whether he lived or died. After he somehow clawed his way to survival and returned to the Reid Family at ten, Owen resented him, so you locked him in the basement for three days and nights—no food, no water."
"When Logan excelled in school and at fourteen earned a place at the best academy abroad, you forced him to give that spot to Owen. When he refused, you personally whipped him thirty times, left him bleeding on the floor, and forbade anyone from treating him."
"Selina, shut your mouth—shut up!"
"There are countless more examples. Only after Logan seized control of the Reid Family did you ease up slightly, but even then you kept pushing him to give way—for Owen’s sake."
"So tell me, Mrs. Perry—when your biological son’s life was never safe, when he starved, froze, had no home, no schooling... on what grounds do you think you can lecture Logan now?"
The reporters glanced at each other, whispering among themselves.
"So, it really doesn’t seem like Mr. Reid is Mrs. Perry’s biological son."
"Exactly. What kind of mother would treat her own child so cruelly?"
Her throat bobbed with panic. Then, hearing Duke William’s words, she scrambled to recover. "Even if I wronged Logan in the past, I’m trying to make it up to him now! Selina, do you really think your status could ever compare to Miss Paula’s?"
"Logan is my son. That’s why I’m giving him such an opportunity. And yet he’s ungrateful!"
Selina chuckled softly. "So after all that, Mrs. Perry, you’re still circling back to the fact that he’s your biological son. Meaning—whoever your biological son is, must marry Miss Paula?"
Amelia hesitated, something gnawing at her, but still said, "That’s right."
"Oh..." Selina drew out the syllable. "Good."
Good? No. Something was wrong. Why would she say good?
"But tell me—Logan, is he really your biological son? Logan, what do you say?"
The room fell into stunned silence. People blinked, confused.
What did that mean... Logan isn’t Amelia’s real son?!
Impossible! For so many years, both the Reid and Perry families had acknowledged Mr. Reid as Amelia’s child. How could it not be true?!
Amelia’s mind roared like thunder. Exposed? No—impossible. Logan couldn’t have found proof.
Without proof, no one would believe him...
And yet, she realized too late—Selina and Logan had both been far too calm this entire time.
