He pressed his forehead gently against hers, letting his words sink in. "I love you, Isa. I have loved you through everything, and I will continue to love you, not for what you give me, but for the one person you are, the only person I ever want, you. So never doubt my love for you even for a second, little bunny."
Even if she had any doubts in her heart about his love for her, those doubts had faded away after learning all the hardships they’d been through together. And even if there was any of it left in the corners of her heart, the sincere, earnest look in those dark eyes of his right now as he confessed why he loved her blew the doubts away like dust in the wind, warming her heart and causing it to feel too swollen with feelings she couldn’t yet voice to him.
Unable to give voice to those feelings, she shyly ducked her head, then lifted it again, deciding to steer their conversation back to a more practical topic.
"Shall we think of a business to start once the winter passes?" she asked. "I am willing to learn about anything to keep our family steady."
"We don’t have to start any such business," Rohan whispered softly, curving his arm around her waist and pulling her close against his chest in a warm, protective hug. "I’m glad you were willing to live with me even knowing I had nothing. Not many would do that, my love. But we don’t need to go through all that trouble to keep our family fed, because I already secured our fortune awhile ago."
His words made Belle moved back from the hug to ask, "How did you do that?"
Rohan smiled. "I made a habit of staying awake at night when I learned about the upcoming war, sneaking out to bury my gold and fortunes in the forest not far from the mountainside. That’s how I secured them all."
After what Angel had confessed and asked of him this evening, Rohan had gone out to take care of the tasks the boy had requested. While he was at it, he thought to check on his buried treasures. He had hidden gold and some land documents just in case they might one day need to leave Nightbrook urgently, and that had turned out to be exactly the situation they were now in. If he hadn’t buried those things, they would have started off with nothing but the cottage and the land around it.
The fortune he had hidden would not only be enough to provide his family with a comfortable life, but also keep them wealthy for a long time. Digging into the ground had taken longer than expected because of his back, but seeing that everything he had buried was still secure and safe brought him immense relief, not that anyone would be foolish enough to venture to that side of the mountain where he had hidden his treasures.
"So we are not going to be poor?" Belle asked, and Rohan nodded his head.
