He was gone all day and returned home when the light had faded from the sky and the air was freezing at night. That became a habit in the next few days after his recovery, as there were many things to be done, especially restocking blood in the cottage.
But the best part of it was leaving in the morning and returning, knowing his family awaited his arrival.
To step into the kitchen and find her working at the stove, glancing shyly over her shoulder, then down at her hands, until he crossed the room and slipped both hands into her apron pockets, resting his chin on her shoulder. The simple act felt like belonging.
"Hello."
To kiss her over her shoulder, awaiting the exquisite moment when she’d turn and loop her arms up in a welcoming embrace, as if inviting him into a quiet world made only for them.
To eat dinner from her plate and spoon, and to help her braid her hair at night before bed, enjoying every small domestic routine they had begun to build together.
"I will fix your hair in the morning before you go out again, Rohan. You can spare a few hours for those untamed strands to be trimmed and cut, no argument," she’d said to him that night on their bed, and he’d not dared to refuse, even though he had a place to be first thing in the morning.
Finally having her doing his hair was the best part. To lean over the basin and shiver while she washed his hair with soap and warm water, then wilt on a kitchen chair while she dried, combed, and cut it. And sometimes during the cut, she kissed his ear, sometimes teased him when he dropped off to sleep at the soothing feeling of the comb running through his hair. He had slept off before she was done, and she had to awaken him with a kiss on the mouth to pull him out of the gentle haze.
Despite the workload on his shoulders, having her and the children made everything worthwhile for Rohan, except for the fact that every time he set eyes on Evenly, he got reminded that another man who deserved to be with his family was fighting for his life in the cave he had chained him to instead of being here. The guilt never left him, no matter how peaceful his days had become.
Evenly’s daughter was recovering and becoming stronger every day, but not as strong and active as her twin. Arielle was still a fragile little thing, where the cold in the mountain seemed way too harsh for the newborn, and most of the time Evenly would have to give her to Angel, tying her in the sling against his chest and wearing a coat over the baby so his body warmth would keep her warm, as her little body wasn’t producing enough warmth to keep her healthy in the cold weather. Angel never complained; he treated her as gently as if she were made of spun glass.
Sometimes, he would be the first to run to Evenly to take the baby from her. He would call her little Elle or simply baby, and sometimes little Red because of her bright red hair. The baby seemed to like his arms even more than her mother’s, because Angel was a creature with a naturally warm body temperature, one he could make even hotter if he needed to.
Whenever his mother was busy, he would babysit his sister along with Elle. However, most of the time, Belle kept her daughter close, carrying her in a sling while she worked, the girl sleeping peacefully against her chest.
Rohan had also made it his everyday routine to go to the cave to visit Rav, who was still in the rogue form, and tell him about his family. Angel had said to do so, as it helped slow down the rate of the rottening, and sometimes they went together, and Rohan would see Angel talk Rav out of his corruption until he fought the darkness and became himself again for a few moments.
"How do you do that, Max?" Rohan had asked one day as they were leaving the cave, after he had watched his son coax the rogue until he was calm and becoming Rav again. Rav had stayed normal for twenty minutes, and in those twenty minutes Angel had filled him up with details about his twins and their mother, grounding him with memories and warmth that made Rav smile and cry bitterly for everything he was missing with his family.
