Chapter 126
His lips grazed the curve of her ear, teeth brushing her earlobe. Edith shivered, her knees threatening to give way.
She tried to steady herself, forcing her breath into an even rhythm in hopes of regaining some composure.
Once her pulse slowed, she managed to speak, her voice soft but insistent. “Justin, the wedding night is supposed to be, well, at night. It’s broad daylight…”
The summer sun poured through the windows of Northcrest, blazing high and unyielding.
Justin only chuckled, the mischief in his eyes matched by the increasing pressure of his lips and teeth against her skin–a playful sort of
punishment.
He left faint indentations on her earlobe. Edith winced, though it wasn’t pain that made her brow furrow; it was the overwhelming intimacy, so bold and immediate, she felt as if she might drown in it.
She scrunched her brow, fighting to hang onto what little rationality she
had left.
Lifting her hand, she tried to push Justin away. But as soon as her fingers brushed the lean muscle of his chest, a jolt shot through her–like
touching a live wire. Her hand tingled, and she yanked it back as if burned.
The gesture made Justin pause, amusement written all over his face. He looked down at the spot/she’d touched.
“What, am I electrified? Did I shock you?”
Edith ducked her head, mortified. She realized she’d just poked him in a rather sensitive spot.
Justin’s gaze lingered on her flushed cheeks, and he found her even more endearing. Those wide, grape–dark eyes darted away before she finally

stammered, “I didn’t mean to! I just… wanted to push you away.”
He narrowed his eyes, stretching out beside her like a lazy cat in an afternoon sunbeam, every inch of him radiating contentment.
“Oh? Push me away? And why would you want to do that?”
His arm tightened around her waist, as if he could somehow pull her closer, fold her into himself completely.
Edith met his gaze, his eyes twinkling with mischief. “It’s the middle of the day…” she reminded him gently.
Just then, Latonia, about to head out to buy groceries, stumbled upon the scene. Hoping to slip away unnoticed, she bumped into a vase, and the sharp clink drew both their attention.
Edith’s embarrassment reached new heights–her face burned, even the tips of her ears turning scarlet. She buried her face against Justin’s chest, wishing she could disappear.
Justin, meanwhile, remained perfectly calm, casting a casual glance at
Latonia.
She stammered apologies, “Sorry, sir. I didn’t mean to-
Justin raised a hand, waving her off. “No need to apologize, Latonia. You’d better get used to seeing us like this around here.”
Edith thumped Justin’s chest in protest, silently warning him to stop
teasing.
Latonia caught the playful exchange and couldn’t help but grin. “Of course, sir. Ma’am. I’ll just head out now–won’t disturb you two any
longer.”
Only after Latonia’s footsteps faded down the hall did Edith begin to
relax.
Justin bent to whisper in her ear, his voice low and teasing. “Since it’s daytime… how about we move to the bedroom? Maybe I can show you a little magic trick.”

Edith rolled her eyes; she was hardly a child, and magic tricks held no appeal. But the bedroom was sounding like a very good idea. With all the staff bustling around Hawksley Manor, the last thing she wanted was another interruption.
She nodded firmly. “All right.”
A sly smile curled at the corner of Justin’s mouth. “Are you sure you’ve
got the strength to walk there on your own?”
Edith let out a tiny huff. What a ridiculous question. Walk to the bedroom? He was seriously underestimating her.
