After a full day and night of sailing, Matthew and the captain were drawing close to Bloodfin Bay.
"How far are we from the waters of Bloodfin Bay?" Matthew asked as he studied the map in his hands.
The captain compared the chart with the surrounding sea. "We're less than 12 miles out from entering Bloodfin Bay's territory."
Matthew nodded. "Anyplace nearby where we could disembark safely?"
A hesitant expression crossed the captain's face. "I'm afraid not, Mr. Larden. There are no other islands in this area."
As they spoke, a sudden blast erupted near the ship, sending violent waves crashing against the hull. A shell had exploded in the water nearby, rocking the vessel hard.
In the distance, a burning ship sped toward them, smoke billowing from its deck. Behind it, a warship was closing in fast, firing round after round of shells. The bomb that had just exploded near them came from that warship.
The captain's face stiffened as he watched the two vessels—the flaming one fleeing desperately, the warship giving relentless chase. He turned to Matthew, his voice low.
"Mr. Larden, what should we do?"
Matthew glanced at the two ships, then shook his head indifferently. "Ignore them. Keep going."
He had no interest in getting involved in someone else's grudge match. As long as they didn't interfere with him, he had no reason to get involved.
Aboard the burning ship, a man watched the warship behind him with a heavy expression.
"Godd*mn b*stards. If I make it back, I'm telling the boss to kill every last one of you sons of b*tches," he muttered through clenched teeth.
Then, he noticed Matthew's ship up ahead and narrowed his eyes slightly, quickly turning the wheel to make sure he didn't collide with it.
One of his men quickly relayed the message to the signal officer.
A moment later, the warship's signalman stood high on the deck, waving two small flags in precise patterns—a set of internationally recognized naval signals.
The message was clear: Surrender immediately, or we will open fire.
Seeing the flags waving from the warship, the captain of Matthew's ship paled. He turned toward Matthew in a panic. "Mr. Larden, this is bad. They've issued a warning. They want us to stop and surrender right now, or they'll open fire!"
Matthew, who had been waiting patiently, his expression calm, narrowed his eyes slightly at the news.
Just as expected. In a place like the West Montiria Islands, peace was a luxury no one could afford.
