Aboard the Medusa Warship, Matthew stared coldly at the fast-approaching swarm of sharks in the distance.
The smile on his face slowly vanished, replaced by a hardened expression.
"They say animals are more sensitive to the threat of death than humans," he muttered. "Looks like these ones have been swimming in saltwater so long they've lost what little brains they had—if they had any at all."
Ryan heard him and sprinted toward the main deck gun.
As Ryan took his position, the massive cannon activated with a mechanical growl.
The menacing snake-shaped gun turret swiveled, locking on to the frenzied movement just above the ocean's surface.
Boom!
The thunderous blast echoed across the water.
In the distance, a towering splash erupted as the shell struck home. Dozens of sharks were blown into the air, torn apart by the blast. The shockwave disrupted the entire school's pursuit.
Matthew's expression didn't change.
"Keep firing!" he shouted.
Ryan, hearing the command from the firing chamber, glanced at the ammunition count—nine rounds left. He slammed his palm onto the launch button.
Boom!
Another shell. Another devastating impact.
Sharks were killed by the dozens. The original swarm—nearly 400 to 500 strong—suddenly lost momentum. Those still alive turned on each other, frantically tearing into the corpses of their fallen.
Only then did Matthew nod, signaling Ryan to cease fire.
Meanwhile, the massive shark—the one targeted by all the other ships—watched the gruesome feeding frenzy unfolding. Fury erupted in its blood-red eyes.
Raaaagh!
Matthew didn't speak shark, but the sound was unmistakable—rage, defiance, and primal fury.
The creature lunged forward, crashing its enormous body into the side of a nearby ship.
Steel groaned. Wood shattered. A massive hole tore open in the vessel's hull.
"Help! Somebody help us!"
"Don't eat me!"
The captain, remembering the firepower of the Medusa Warship, shouted to his crew.
"Fire everything we've got!"
"If we make it out of here alive," he added with a wicked grin, "all the female slaves we captured—you can have your pick!"
The promise sparked a desperate morale boost.
The crew fought with renewed frenzy, firing every weapon at their disposal.
But their cannons were weak.
Unlike the Medusa Warship's heavy artillery, these standard deck guns could barely take out a dozen sharks per volley. Worse, every hit only seemed to send the swarm into a deeper blood rage.
Sharks rammed the hull. More leapt from the water onto the deck.
Crew members vanished, one by one.
And in the end, as the captain himself was swallowed whole by the enormous shark leading the charge, the ship was lost.
Completely and utterly destroyed.
