Bud's voice echoed in the air.
And Nathaniel froze.
His wife's death had always been the nightmare that haunted him.
Now, hearing Bud bring it up again, a storm of fury surged in his chest.
Grabbing Bud by the collar, Nathaniel roared, "Do you have a death wish?"
"Kill me. Go ahead. Do it." Bud laughed like a man gone mad.
A knife appeared in Nathaniel's hand. Without another word, he brought it down. The blade plunged straight into Bud's chest.
A strangled cry burst from Bud's throat. Blood sprayed across Nathaniel's face, cutting off the laughter in an instant.
"Thank you… Nathaniel… for making it quick…" Bud whispered through a fading breath. "In my coat… there's a letter…"
He never finished the sentence.
His head slumped. His lips still carried the trace of a smile.
Nathaniel remained frozen, the knife still in his grip. And then, understanding hit him like a brick wall.
With trembling hands, he searched Bud's body and retrieved a blood-stained letter.
The strategist nearby, Gideon, was ashen-faced. His breathing almost stopped.
From Bud's final words alone, he already had a sinking feeling about what the letter contained.
A confession meant to expose him.
'Nathaniel—this letter was prepared ahead of time. I've always respected you more than anyone. When your wife was sick, she made me promise to protect Yvette...
But there are too many wolves circling the guards. I knew we couldn't hold out forever. So, I made a move.
Gideon is a mole from one of those factions. I gave him false intel. They'll be coming for us soon—this is the best shot we've ever had to wipe them out.
I've made enemies. Too many. If I stayed alive, the guards would never win over the entire district. That's why I chose death.
Bud.'
Nathaniel sank to the ground beside Bud. He'd been wrong—entirely, heartbreakingly wrong.
Bud hadn't been betraying him. He'd been provoking Nathaniel, seeking death just to protect Nathaniel and Yvette.
"Bud…" he murmured, again and again, his voice thick with remorse.
This man had stood beside him for over a decade. And he'd killed him with his own hands, but there was no time to grieve.
Nathaniel clenched the letter. Bud couldn't die for nothing—not like this.
