Rosenthal tore through the streets, his car eating up the distance until he reached the district's highest-level communication center.
This place served as the heart of their operations, where missions were coordinated and urgent contact could be made with operatives far from home.
"Bring up the emergency channel right now. Get me through to Mr. Ryan."
The receiver came alive with a string of sharp tones before a final click broke the rhythm.
"Hello, this is Mr. Ryan's temporary operator. May I—"
Rosenthal's voice erupted through the line, his tone hard as steel.
"Spare me the small talk. Get Mr. Ryan on the line now, and tell him Mr. Larden has been waiting far too long in the district."
The officer on the other end froze at the sound of his commander's voice.
Without hesitation, he dashed to the bathhouse, where steam hung thick in the air, and shoved the radio toward Ryan, who was sunk in a hot spring, bare from the waist up and idly shredding rose petals between his fingers.
"You've got nerve barging in on me like this," Ryan said, his eyes glinting with mock irritation.
"Sir, I didn't mean to. Commander Rosenthal says it's urgent. A man named Matteo Larden has been waiting for you for quite a while."
At the name, Ryan shot upright in the water, sending it splashing against the stone edges.
He seemed entirely unaware that he stood with nothing to cover him.
The young officer turned a deep shade of red and pulled his head down into his shoulders, doing his best to avert his gaze.
Few people in the district could claim to have been this close to Ryan's much-whispered-about physique.
"Hand me the radio," Ryan barked.
He snatched it up and wasted no time with pleasantries.
"Rosenthal, where the hell have you been? Why am I just now hearing that Mr. Larden has been waiting for me?"
Before Rosenthal could reply, Ryan ended the call.
That's it, the boss is furious now, Rosenthal thought.
In a blur, Ryan dressed, straightened his uniform, and strode out.
His pace carried an edge of urgency, nearly a run, as he cut through the corridors toward Matthew's location.
Every soldier along his path stopped to bow.
Normally, Ryan might have tossed them a teasing remark or corrected a sloppy salute, but now he pushed forward without pause.
