Nicholas' complicated gaze landed on Roxanne, and he smiled with some difficulty. "What happened exactly?"
Roxanne hesitated for a moment but ultimately didn't hide the truth. Being honest would help with Sebastian's treatment. After all, it was her doing, so she shouldn't run from it. If Sebastian really died, she would take responsibility and pay with her own life.
"When he tried to force himself on me, I kicked him off the bed. Then, he started vomiting blood."
Nicholas was speechless. He understood each individual word she said. But somehow, when they were strung together, he couldn't make sense of them.
Sebastian tried to force himself on Roxanne? And she kicked him off the bed? Then, he started vomiting blood?
He couldn't comprehend it. He was shocked—completely shaken!
He looked at Roxanne, who was pale-faced and trembling, and thought she must have been terrified. All he could do was try to comfort her. "Don't worry. His life's not in danger."
Sebastian's condition looked alarming, but it wasn't life-threatening.
As soon as Roxanne heard those words, the tension that had lasted until now finally melted away. She collapsed onto the bench and buried her face in her hands.
She had only just woken up from a hangover not long ago, and her brain was still a foggy mess. And then all of this happened in quick succession. She felt powerless and terrified.
"What exactly is wrong with him?"
"This is all my fault," Nicholas said with a deeply troubled expression. "A few days ago at the city hall, when he heard that you were already married, he got so angry that he started coughing up blood. He probably had a blockage ever since.
"I called him a few times and told him to get himself checked out, but he never went. He said he was fine, and I believed him."
Nicholas looked at her, then glanced at Sebastian through the window of the emergency room. Nicholas had always thought that being in love was supposed to be a joyful thing. But looking at Roxanne and Sebastian, he couldn't help but wonder if this was really love. No, it was more like death.
"Is there really no chance for you and Sebastian anymore? He really regrets it now," Nicholas said hesitantly.
Roxanne didn't know how to respond. She had truly wanted to break up and had genuinely wanted to sever ties with Sebastian. But the problem now was that he wouldn't let go.
Roxanne had known for a long time that if he didn't let go, it would be hard for her to get away.
She used to think that someone as proud as him would eventually back off if she turned him down firmly and decisively enough. But to her surprise, the more she rejected him, the more extreme his resistance became.
Now, just seeing Sebastian made her scalp tingle.
