Gavin’s anger ebbed, replaced by a dawning stupor. Good grief… he really is delivering his final words.

He knew Julius‘ condition well. Months of insomnia had worn him thin, yet recently his strength had begun to return. There were no other illnesses–nothing fatal lurking in his medical charts.

Gavin’s eyes narrowed to slits. “Is this because of your father? What game are you playing, Julius Whitethorn?”

Gavin rarely used Julius‘ full name. When he did, it meant his temper had snapped.

“Someone dared threaten Quinn’s safety,” Julius said, tone almost serene. “Removing that threat is only natural.”

Gavin planted both palms on Julius‘ desk, leaning forward until the lamplight carved hard angles across his face. “So you’re seriously planning to murder your own father? Joaquin Whitethorn isn’t some helpless old man. Aren’t you the least bit afraid he’ll turn the blade back on you?”

Julius‘ reply came as calmly as if he were discussing the weather. “If the day arrives when there is no other path, then the two of us might die together.

The words were delivered in an almost conversational murmur, yet they chilled Gavin to the marrow, as though someone had opened a window in mid–winter and let the night air rush in.

Gavin let out a short, disbelieving laugh that tasted of iron. “Dying together? You can say that with a straight face? If you’re gone, what happens to Quinn and the baby?”

Julius lifted a pale signet ring, its white jade surface glinting under the light. “That’s exactly why you have to tell Quinn what this ring means,” he said. “Before I leave, I’ll place it in her hand. She’s stronger than you think–strong enough to raise our child and carve out a life without me. I, on the other hand, can’t imagine breathing if she is no longer in this world.”

Gavin straightened, crossing his arms. “Then tell her yourself. I’m not your messenger boy, Julius.”

Julius ignored the protest. His gaze dropped to the ring, thumb circling its edges as though the simple motion could polish away every fear clawing at his heart.

“I’ve never asked much out of life,” he murmured, eyes never leaving the jade. “Right now, all I want is for Quin and our child to stay safe. For that, I’d sacrifice everything–money, power, even the pulse in my veins.”

Gavin studied him, a knot of emotions tightening behind his ribs: admiration, frustration, and something like dread, all warring for space.

Julius‘ raven–dark eyes rose, fixing on Gavin. “There was a time when life or death meant nothing to me. Living, dying–it was all the same shade of gray. But that changed the moment Quinn walked in. If I ever choose death now, it’ll be because it’s the only way to shield her.”

“Do you really have to push it that far?” Gavin urged, softer now. “Give us time. We can get Joaquin thrown back in prison–legally this time.”

Julius‘ fingers clenched around the ring. “And wait for him to escape again? Wait for the next scheme to put a bullet in Quinnie’s back? I won’t gamble her future on courtroom bars that never hold.”

“Even so, dying with him doesn’t have to be the answer,” Gavin insisted. “There has to be another way.”

“I’m not planning to die with him,” Julius said, voice sharpening. “It’s the last card in the deck, nothing more. I’ll meet Joaquin in Yarburn. Once I leave Jexburgh, her safety becomes your responsibility. You must also explain the ring after I’m gone. One more thing…”

His tone turned to steel. “Until I walk out of this city, you will not breathe a single word of this to her.”

Gavin shook his head. “I’ve told you already. The ring is your secret to share, not mine.”

“That wasn’t a request, Gavin–it was an order,” Julius said, frost in every syllable. “Unless the Huxley family plans to sever all ties with the Whitethorns, you’ll do as I say.”

The threat lodged in Gavin’s throat like a swallowed shard of glass, leaving him momentarily speechless.
