Chapter 12
Shortly after 9 p.m., Tabitha and Kimberly arrived at the house.
Tabitha had spent the entire day searching for Arabella. The worry gnawed at her so much that blisters had formed at the corner of her mouth from biting her lip in anxiety. When she saw Jayceon acting as if nothing was wrong, her anger flared up fiercely.
Jayceon tried to soothe her, his voice calm but firm. “Don’t worry, Mom. Arabella will be fine.”
He understood better than anyone else just how dramatic Arabella could be.
He recalled one birthday when he was a whole day late with her present. She had been so upset that she disappeared without a word. After a frantic search, he finally found her relaxing in a hot spring, sipping red wine, and receiving a massage from a renowned therapist. Arabella knew how to enjoy life and cherished herself deeply. Even if she drove everyone around her crazy, she would never let harm come to herself.
But Tabitha was beyond frustrated. In a sudden burst of fury, she flicked a cup of coffee right into Jayceon’s face. Her voice trembled with rage.
“Jayceon,” she snapped, “I’ve raised you for thirty years, and I’ve always been proud of you as my son. But now I see the truth. You’re just as cold and heartless as your father!”
Jayceon remained composed, wiping the coffee from his face without a word. “You’re overreacting, Mom.”
Tears welled up in Tabitha’s eyes. “Arabella is your wife. That girl has loved you since she was a child. You two had a fight, and you just gave her the cold shoulder? Are you trying to push her away so you can divorce her?”
Jayceon’s voice was steady and resolute. “Mom, we won’t get divorced. I know exactly what I’m doing.”
Kimberly, standing nearby, gave Tabitha an encouraging thumbs-up. “Jay, do you really think Arabella won’t leave you just because she loves you?”
She added with a knowing tone, “True love doesn’t tolerate betrayal.”
“Enough,” Jayceon snapped, irritated.
Kimberly pouted and fell silent, sensing the tension was too high to continue.
After Tabitha and Kimberly left, Jayceon lit a cigarette, staring into the smoke as if searching for answers.
At 3 a.m., Jayceon called Steve. “You don’t need to come to the company for the next couple of days. Instead, keep an eye on the hospital. If you see Arabella there, call me immediately.”
Before hanging up, he added quietly, “Her mother just had heart surgery. She needs rest. Be careful not to disturb her.”
On the other end, Steve’s eyes widened in disbelief as he checked the clock. It was 3 a.m. His boss wanted him to stake out the hospital at such an ungodly hour? Was Jayceon’s insomnia acting up again?
Three days passed, and Arabella still hadn’t returned.
Tabitha and Kimberly were ready to involve the police and alert the Palmer family, but Jayceon was firmly against it.
He was confident Arabella was safe and would come back home soon enough.
His father, Conrad Melendez, and grandfather, Chester Melendez, shared his opinion. Calling the police over a missing daughter-in-law was not something the Melendez family wanted to do.
Besides, the Palmer family was already bankrupt. Arabella no longer held any value to the Melendez family. She simply wasn’t worth the trouble.
