**Chapter 246**

“Mom, is it only when you see me and Arabella getting a divorce that you’ll finally feel satisfied?” Jayceon’s voice trembled with a blend of frustration and desperation as he faced his mother, the weight of the conversation pressing heavily on his chest.

Tabitha’s lips curled into a derisive scoff, her expression hardening like stone. “You know better than anyone whether Arabella truly wants to be with you or not,” she retorted, her tone sharp and unyielding.

Jayceon felt as though her words were physical blows, each one landing with painful precision. He leaned against the edge of the conference table, his shoulders slumping under the relentless burden of expectation and disapproval. The room felt stifling, the air thick with unspoken tension.

For what felt like an eternity, silence enveloped them, heavy and suffocating. Finally, he mustered the courage to speak again, his voice dropping to a near whisper, almost pleading. “Mom, I know you’ve watched Arabella grow up, and I understand your concern for her well-being. But I’m your son too. I’ve told you time and again that I don’t want a divorce. I’m committed to fixing things with Arabella. Can you please just stop putting so much pressure on me?”

Tabitha’s gaze narrowed, her tone unwavering as she replied, “Leandro is your own flesh and blood, after all. He’s a Melendez. You have to take responsibility for him and for his mother.”

Her words struck him like a cold slap, each syllable echoing in his mind. “You’re going to stay with them tonight. If you don’t, I’ll make sure that child is formally accepted into the Melendez family tomorrow. I’ll have him recognized as a member of our family, while discarding the mother!”

With that, she stormed out, leaving Jayceon reeling from the weight of her ultimatum, his mind swirling with confusion and dread.

Once he was alone, he sank into his office chair, utterly drained, feeling as though the life had been sucked out of him. The confrontation had left him feeling hollow, a shell of the man he once was. He had only acknowledged Leandro to create a moment of hesitation for his grandfather, hoping to protect Georgina from unnecessary hardship. But that child wasn’t his, and the thought of his mother formally bringing the boy into the Melendez family was an unbearable weight on his conscience.

He sat in silence, the clock ticking away the seconds, each tick a reminder of the pressure mounting on him. Finally, he took a deep breath, steeling himself, and dialed Arabella’s number.

“Hey, I just wanted to let you know I have a work dinner and might be home late,” he said, trying to keep his tone casual, though his heart raced with anxiety.

“Mhm,” Arabella replied, her voice flat and devoid of warmth, and then the line went dead, leaving Jayceon feeling more isolated than ever.

Later that evening, after an exhausting day at work, Arabella found herself being swept away by a few enthusiastic female colleagues to a trendy new restaurant that had garnered rave reviews. The vibrant atmosphere buzzed with laughter and animated chatter, yet Arabella felt like a ghost, detached from the joy swirling around her, merely a spectator in her own life.

It was just after eight when she finally stepped outside into the cool evening air, a light rain beginning to fall, creating a soft patter against the pavement. She watched her colleagues depart, their laughter fading into the distance, and pulled her coat tighter around her, seeking warmth against the chill that seeped into her bones.
