Chapter 405

Their eyes met. Amanda murmured an apology, then picked up her bag and walked to the office

door.

Just as she reached the door, Amanda suddenly stopped.

She turned back to Jayceon and said: “Mr. Melendez, actually, the two of us are very much alike. Always putting family first, always putting interests first.”

Jayceon corrected her, word by word: “You and I, we are not the same!”

Amanda gave a small laugh: “At least, you were that kind of person, Mr. Melendez, before you divorced your ex-wife.”

As she left, Amanda added one more thing: “Otherwise, a relationship of over twenty years between you and your ex-wife, your childhood sweethearts, wouldn’t have ended in separation.”

After watching Amanda leave the office, Jayceon snapped again in a low voice at the assistants by the door: “Shut the door!”

The four assistants at the door quickly shut the office door, cach too scared to look up.

Enduring the twisting pain in his chest, Jayceon opened a drawer, took out a bottle of pills, went to the liquor cabinet, and frantically poured himself a drink.

Just as Tabitha entered carrying a thermal container, she saw Jayceon fumbling to open a pill bottle, about to take the medicine.

Jayceon turned, saw Tabitha come in, and discreetly slipped the painkillers into his pocket.

“Don’t hide it. I saw everything!”

Her heart aching, Tabitha helped Jayceon to the sofa to rest.

Tabitha ladled out the Stomach-Soothing Herbal Broth she had brought and personally supervised Jayceon while he ate.

Stirring the Millet Porridge in his bowl, Jayceon asked his mother, “Mom, did you talk to Amanda when you came up?”

Tabitha: “With a mountain of things waiting for me at home, I don’t have time to chat with her.”

After she spoke, Tabitha paused for a moment: “Why do you ask?”

Jayceon shook his head: “Nothing, just curious.”

Tabitha stared at her son for a long time,

She asked her son, “Have you come around? Are you willing to get engaged to her?”

Jayceon shook his head and put down his soup spoon.

He said, “Mom, I’m not going to get engaged to her.”

Tabitha picked up the bowl of Millet Porridge and placed it back in Jayceon’s hands.

Tabitha said, “You took Arabella away without a word and brought her back safe and sound. I know you’ve made your decision. Whether it was your choice or not, now that it’s made, don’t dwell on it. Just focus on getting better, and things will slowly improve.”

The hand Jayceon used to hold the bowl tightened unconsciously.

He had lost the woman who loved him most.

His marriage was over.

His home was gone.

He would never be okay again.

There were so many things he couldn’t allow himself to think about.

Even if every fiber of his being screamed against it, he had to let her go.

Seeing her son in such agony, Tabitha’s own heart ached.

Tabitha pleaded patiently, “Jay, I know you can’t bear it, but what’s done is done, and you have to accept it. You’ve always been so calm. Think of your responsibilities, think of your father, your sister, and me. Please listen to me and don’t be so stubborn.”

The anguish in Jayceon’s eyes slowly intensified.

He spoke, his voice raw with emotion, trying to reassure Tabitha, “Mom, don’t worry about me. I’m just not ready for a lifetime without Arabella. Just give me some more time.”
