Chapter 338: My Morning Protein

****************

Chapter 339

~Valerie’s POV~

My heart skipped several beats as my lips parted soundlessly.

My breathing was shallow and uneven. What was I supposed to answer? I didn’t even know what I’d be agreeing to... entirely.

Was it an occult group that dealt with more than just killing? Was it demonic? Did they practice dark magic?

All I have learnt and was taught did not seem to help me with my decision as I wondered if it was an invitation... or a trap?

The elegant writing on the page almost seemed to pulse under my gaze, like it was alive, like it was waiting for me to make a choice.

"Astra..." I whispered internally, my voice shaky. "Do I... answer?"

My wolf stirred faintly, her presence pressing warmly in my mind.

"Be careful, Val. It may very well be Nightshade Thorn, but..." She hesitated, her usually confident tone laced with unease. "...but I don’t know what to make of this."

I swallowed hard, torn between scepticism and an inexplicable pull deep in my chest.

My fingers trembled as I hovered over the page, heart pounding so loudly I was sure someone outside could hear it.

And then the writing burst into tiny streaks of dancing flames, curling and consuming each letter like it was daring me to act before it was too late.

Before I even realised it, I breathed out, "Yes."

The page shivered beneath my fingertips as if the very fabric of the parchment had absorbed my answer.

In an instant, the word "Yes" bloomed on the paper in bold, purple ink, pulsing once... twice... before it burned away completely.

I stared down at my empty hands, the cream-colored paper now nothing but ash that vanished like smoke. Only the heavy golden key remained in my palm.

My breath hitched. "What... just happened?" I murmured.

"You just tied yourself to something," Astra answered softly, her voice curling around my thoughts like a wary whisper. "Whether that’s good or bad... I can’t tell yet."

I nodded faintly, even though she couldn’t see me. "Tomorrow," I whispered. "Tomorrow, I’ll find out more."

Clutching the key, I tucked it safely beneath my pillow, stripped off my clothes, and padded toward the bathroom.

The hot water was supposed to wash away my nerves, but the more I thought about that letter, the heavier my chest felt.

When I finally collapsed onto my bed, damp-haired and exhausted, my stomach growled, reminding me I hadn’t eaten.

But my body was too drained to care. I let the exhaustion pull me under, sinking into a restless sleep.

By the time I woke up, it was barely dawn. Night still greeted the academy.

My breath caught instantly, though, because that weird, electrifying sensation between my legs had returned — the same one I’d been waking up to for the past two weeks.

Only... this time it was stronger.

A startled gasp escaped me as I shifted beneath the covers, my heartbeat thundering wildly. Heat pooled low in my belly, sharp and demanding, and my breath came in uneven bursts.

Then, as I blinked blearily down, I noticed movement.

My covers had slid slightly, pooling around my waist. And there — against the pale skin of my inner thigh — a curtain of soft, silvery hair glimmered faintly in the early morning light.
