My Best Friend’s Father Wants me novel Chapter 14

Enora:

I was uneasy in the car ride back to the penthouse. Mr. Wright sat next to me and was busy on his laptop. I was flustered sitting next to me and fought as hard as I could to not think about what happened in the meeting room.

I was still stunned that Miss Catherine didn’t seem suspicious. The locksmithing company came and changed the locks of the meeting room. I felt guilt strum my heart as they left. I knew that there was nothing wrong with the lock but no one asked any questions.

I turned to the window and distracted myself with the sights of the city as we drove by. I wish I could see more of it. I had only gotten a small slice of the beauty of this place the night we went to dinner.

“Is everything alright, Miss Lopez?”

I turned my head and saw those warm brown eyes looking at me. I would never get used to his stare. Powerful yet so alluring.

“I’m alright. I am just admiring the view.”

He closed his laptop and I took the cue to turn around and face him.

“I will be having a party this weekend. One of our clients has graciously invited me. As much as I am not a fan of social frivolities such as this, and I have a list of things that I would rather do instead of attend…”

His eyes washed over me lustfully. My breathing hitched. Fuck! I was a slave to those eyes.

“...I will honor his invitation and I would like you to come with me.”

I was silent. I tried to act cool and professional about his invitation but the bewilderment in my eyes betrayed me. He wanted to go to a party with me? Won’t people talk? I hated parties, and I knew that they were the source of great gossip. What would people say if they saw me attending a party with my smoking hot boss? Nothing good, that was for sure.

“I…”

“It is a company party. Nothing crazy or wild. You don’t have to worry about a thing.”

His voice sounded so calm and reassuring. If he told me to jump off a cliff with that tone, I would happily oblige.

“I accept. I would like to see more of the city.”

He smiled and turned his attention back to the laptop. I was trapped and while he worked, I stole long glances at him.

He was forty years old but didn’t look like he had even scratched the surface of his mid-thirties. Only a few grey streaks in his jet-black hair gave him away, yet they were very stylish. His arms were muscular and I suddenly realized that he probably bought shirts that were a tight fit to show them off. I couldn’t blame him or the women who drooled over him when they saw him. Even Miss Cathrine was caught in awe at his looks now and then.

His nose was a handsome shape, and it made his profile just as sexy as a full view of his face, along with his sculpted jaw and those thick eagle-arched brows of his.

The car screeched to a halt and I was pulled out of my gazing. His head turned to look at me and I flushed scarlet. And here I was thinking that I had escaped his watchful eyes. We got out of the car and walked to the hotel.

The receptionist had seen us more than enough times but she still drooled like a puppy. I wanted to roll my eyes at her as I got into the elevator beside Mr. Wright, but I, too, was guilty of such behavior.

My laptop was pressed against my chest and I kept my eyes straight ahead during the entire elevator ride. I was scared to meet his gaze. I needed my legs to work properly. The thought of me tripping and smashing my new laptop made me press it harder to my chest. My poor diaphragm.

The door opened, and Mr. Wright got out, and I followed behind him, walking slowly and cautiously, almost counting every step that I took.
