Enora:
My fingers ran over the keyboard with amazing speed. I had never been able to type so fast in my life. Maybe my solemnity fueled some kind of focus inside of me. I was less clumsy as well.
My phone sprung to life and I glanced at the time: 11:00 am. Mr. Wright was supposed to have his second meeting today and I still hadn’t been called by Ms. Catherine to take the minutes of the meeting.
I sighed. I guess I was getting fired after all. He didn’t need me and probably had someone else taking the minutes. At least I understood why I was speedy with my work. I was finishing up, trying to get everything done before I received my termination, effective immediately. I was certain that it was going to come this time.
I continued to type. It was a few minutes to my break. I finished up the document and opened the site to buy my tickets back home. $50.67…wow…that was more than last time.
The next available flight was in three days. I would find a different hotel to stay until then.
A silent tear slipped down my cheeks but I wiped it off and reached for the aspirin. I groaned. It had been almost six hours since I took the last tablet.
I popped it in my mouth and reached for my bottle of water when I heard a knock at the door.
“Come in.”
I swallowed the tablet and saw Adam standing at the door. He had a grim look on his face. His eyes searched my face sadly and pulled out an envelope from his pocket.
“Mr. Wright asked me to give you this.”
He placed it on the table and walked away without another word. My palms were sweaty and my heart skipped a beat. I couldn’t take my eyes off the sealed envelope with the company logo on it. It was an official letter, nothing like the one that Mr. Wright sent with his freaky list of demands. The thought made me shudder.
“Just open it, Enora. You have been expecting it. You basically told him to fire you.”
I reached out but pulled my hands away. I couldn’t. I couldn’t open it. I knew what it was already. There was no need to look at it and give myself more things to cry about.
I buried my head in my hands.
“I’m sorry, Bridget. You gave me a job and I blew it. I fucking blew it!”
The envelope crinkled as I stuffed it in my bag. I would go home at the end of the work day. I would pack my stuff, stay in a different hotel, and book my flight back home.
I glanced at my desk and the laptop I had been given. I would return it when I closed for the day.
~~~
5:00 pm. I never thought I would dread it this much. I had the envelope in my hand and my laptop was hugged against my chest. The motherboard could be crushed with the force of my pounding heart but I kept it close to my chest anyway.
“Ms Catherine, have you seen Mr. Wright?”
“He is still in a meeting. He should be finishing up soon.”
She continued with her work and gave one of the employees some instructions concerning Romeo Industries. I shivered. I never wanted to hear that name ever again.
I sat in the reception office, waiting. The time ticked on so slowly. It was ice cold but beads of sweat dotted my forehead. The aspirin was wearing off as well. The seat felt uncomfortable and shifting my weight was agony. It took everything in me to not groan in pain.
“Miss Lopez.”
I gasped and nearly fell off my chair but a hand reached out to grab me. I was locked again with those familiar brown eyes. My bracelet slid up my arm and the bruises on my arm were visible.
