I never anticipated that I would run into Victoria at the hospital just as I was about to leave. She appeared almost cloaked in secrecy, a scarf tightly wound around her head and face, her steps quick and purposeful.

Her eyes darted around, scanning the vicinity as though she were afraid of being followed. Watching her, a sense of urgency ignited within me, compelling me to shadow her movements.

There was no way she had come to visit Julia; if that were the case, she wouldn’t be acting so furtively.

Julia had regained consciousness mere moments after Lydia and Mason had departed. Given the grave expression on Victoria’s face, I couldn’t shake the feeling that her presence here was anything but innocent.

As I slipped into the shadowy hallway adjacent to where Victoria stood with a doctor and a nurse, I felt my heart race. The doctor’s face was obscured from my view, but the nurse’s face was familiar—I had seen her earlier in Julia’s room.

Initially, their conversation reached my ears like a whisper, muffled by my distance. But as my curiosity eclipsed my fear of being discovered, I edged closer, straining to hear their words.

It was evident to me, even before I caught their conversation, that Victoria was concocting something sinister.

“She can be injected with Heparin. It’s a medication administered every eight hours. We don’t need to adhere to the proper dosage; we can increase it by a few doses each time. It’ll take care of things in the next two days,” the nurse’s voice dripped with malevolence.

A sharp gasp escaped my lips, and I instinctively covered my mouth with my hand. Victoria was plotting to kill Julia.

“That’s a brilliant plan. We must ensure that this doesn’t trace back to us. I’ll transfer the money once I confirm her death, and then you two can quit your jobs and leave the country,” Victoria replied, her voice cold and calculating.

Her jaw clenched, and she turned her face slightly in my direction. Panic surged through me, and I quickly ducked behind the wall, my heart pounding furiously against my ribcage.

“I think someone is here,” Victoria’s voice pierced the tension, and my heart raced even faster.

I could hear her footsteps approaching, and I pressed my back against the wall, wishing it could somehow swallow me whole.

“I don’t think so,” the doctor interjected, and Victoria halted in her tracks. I held my breath, praying for the moment to pass.

“No one is here. I have other matters to attend to, so I’ll take my leave first,” the doctor stated, his voice steady.

“I saw so—”

“When will you wire the first half? I haven’t received mine,” he interrupted her, and I felt a flicker of hope.

“I’ll send it right away,” Victoria replied, her tone still icy.

Once the doctor left, I let out a breath I didn’t realize I was holding.

“That’s just how he is,” the nurse remarked after the doctor’s departure. “He’s straightforward and gets things done meticulously.”

“That’s even better. I don’t want any mistakes this time,” Victoria replied, her voice low and menacing. “Julia shouldn’t blame me; she should blame her bad luck.”

Lydia had been right all along—Victoria was behind the fall. Pushing her wasn’t enough; she wanted her dead.

What could Julia have possibly done to earn Victoria’s wrath? I still recalled the days when Victoria praised her for being the perfect match for Mason. It was unfathomable that she would now dismiss her so callously.

I couldn’t remain hidden any longer. Julia’s life was in jeopardy, and I had to intervene.

Julia was the only one capable of clearing Lydia’s name. If she were to die, then all hope would be lost.

Executing this plan within the hospital wouldn’t be a challenge. I had a rapport with the director, and I had generously donated to the hospital on numerous occasions.

A single phone call to the director was all it took to ensure the nurse and doctor were removed from their posts for the remainder of the month.

“We are currently understaffed at the moment, but since it’s the first request you’ve ever made, I’ll grant it,” Oliver said on the other end of the line.

Seated behind the steering wheel, I listened to Julia’s strained voice echoing in my mind.

“I want them out of the hospital within the next thirty minutes. Can I count on that?”

There was a brief pause on the other end before he replied, “Yes,” and after a heartbeat, he added, “but why? Why are you going to such lengths with them?”

“You promised not to pry,” I reminded him, suddenly aware of the boundaries of our friendship.

“I can’t help but be curious; you rarely make such requests.”
