Skye’s POV
The cabin fell into silence as Victor finished his story, I watched Adrian’s face carefully, noting how his features had frozen in shock.
This wasn’t just about pack politics or Alpha King ambitions, this was deeply personal.
“I had no idea,” Adrian finally said, his voice hoarse. “I never knew you were Nadia’s mate. I certainly didn’t know you and your mother lived like that in our pack.” He ran a hand through his dark hair, clearly struggling. “If you were being mistreated, why didn’t you come to me or my father for help?”
Victor let out a harsh laugh. “What? Should I have crawled to you on my knees? That was never going to happen. His eyes flashed with bitterness. “My mother couldn’t bear to accept any more charity from your family. We already lived in your handout housing, ate your handout food.”
“That wasn’t charity,” Adrian argued. “That was basic pack support.”
I couldn’t stay silent anymore. “Even if what you’re saying is true, it doesn’t justify what you’ve done,” I said, crossing my arms. “None of this explains why you tried to kill Adrian. It sounds like you were just jealous of him.”
Although Victor’s past stirred a flicker of compassion in me, it wasn’t enough to outweigh his crimes. He’d manipulated the trials, attempted murder multiple times, and was responsible for so much suffering.
“Jealous?” Victor’s laugh was cold and empty. “You think I wanted to kill Adrian just because I was jealous?”
He leaned forward, his chains rattling. “A Beta position might seem insignificant to you, but it was everything my mother ever hoped for me. Four years ago, when I lost the Beta competition, I was demoted to a simple patrol guard. With my skills, I could have at least become a warrior even without being Beta.”
His eyes darkened. “The new Beta lived next door to us. His family had always looked down on my mother and me. Once he got the position, he claimed I lacked discipline because I drank wolf whiskey occasionally. He said it made me unfit to be a warrior and assigned me to a dead–end job. In reality, I only drank wolf whiskey once, the night Nadia rejected me”
Victor’s hands clenched into fists. “My mother tried to comfort me, saying being a patrol guard wasn’t so bad. But our neighbors weren’t finished with us.”
His voice dropped to something barely above a whisper. “They kept finding new ways to humiliate my mother. They said the son of a Rogue had inherited inferior blood, that I was delusional to even dream of becoming a Beta.
During one argument, I defended her, and a fight broke out. My mother got caught in the middle, I accidentally pushed her, and her head hit a rock.” Pain flashed across his face. “She’s been in a coma ever since.”
I felt my breath catch. The raw anguish in his voice was undeniable.
‘I’d already lost my mate. My mother was everything I had left, Victor continued. “So I decided to take revenge on everyone who had hurt us. His eyes met mine, blood–red and chilling. “That neighbor and his family died in an ‘accidental‘ house fire.”
I gasped involuntarily. The casual way he admitted to murdering an entire family sent chills down my spine. If he had become Stormhowl Pack’s Beta, he truly would have been a formidable warrior, and his mother’s pride. But instead, that path had twisted into something dark and vengeful.

Adrian’s jaw lightened. “If you wanted revenge against me, why wait until now? Why not act sooner?
Victor’s shoulders sagged slightly. “I didn’t originally plan to kill you. Since Nadia chose you, I was prepared to let it go. Besides, your uncle Maxwell had already kicked you out of the pack. You weren’t the high and mighty prince anymore.”
His eyes hardened again.
“But then Nadia died because of you, and somehow, someone like you still got to compete in the Alpha King election. You don’t deserve that honor.”
He straightened his spine. “So I joined the North American Werewolf House of Representatives as a low–level staffer. It gave me access to the trials.”
“In the second trial, you were clearly targeting me,” Adrian said. “But why did you go after Skye?”
*Remember the card drawing?” Victor asked. “I had arranged the order carefully. The first card was supposed to be hostage, and you were meant to be locked in that oven.” His mouth twisted. “But your Beta shuffled the cards and ruined everything. That’s her own fault!”
