His grandpa didn’t love him, not even a little. No matter how sad or miserable he felt, his grandpa still refused his tiny request.
Dennis was fuming.
Most kids are like that. They want the world to revolve around them. Everyone should like them, nobody should dislike or reject them, everyone should spoil them and give them all the best things. Nothing should ever go to another kid.
Dennis Lane, who had always been pampered, took this to a whole new level.
Whenever something upset him, Dennis made sure to remember it. He would grumble silently, keeping score in his mind.
So when Kevin Lane treated him this way, Dennis definitely noticed.
But the truth was, Kevin Lane had been so good to him before. That was something Dennis just couldn’t forget. So really, he was only mad in the way you get mad when you’re not allowed to watch cartoons. It stung, but it wasn’t the end of the world.
Even so, Dennis would never dare say how he really felt.
He shook his head right away. “No.”
He repeated, a little louder, “I’m not mad at Grandpa.”
He tried to sound convincing, but the way he avoided Kevin’s eyes made it obvious he was lying.
Kevin didn’t give up. He reached out and patted Dennis on the shoulder. “I know you’re upset, Dennis. It’s because Grandpa hit you too hard that day, right? I’m here to say sorry.”
“I shouldn’t have done that. Will you forgive me?” Kevin asked softly.
Dennis insisted again, “I’m not mad.”
Kevin opened his hands. “If you’re not mad, how about a hug? Just one.”
Dennis peeked up at him, then looked down again. He thought maybe Grandpa was mad because he’d refused to hug him earlier.
