Kevin raised an eyebrow. “He told you himself that he’s okay?”
Amelia nodded, barely glancing up from the TV. “Yeah, Grandpa, he said he’s fine. I told you, kids forget stuff fast. After a good night’s sleep, they’re back to normal. You really don’t need to worry.”
Kevin’s voice dropped, heavy with concern. “Then why didn’t he pick up when I called?”
Amelia just lifted her eyebrows, acting casual.
The Lane family had given Dennis a fancy phone watch, top of the line, with almost all the features of a regular smartphone except for internet access. It even had GPS, just so they could always keep tabs on him. Everyone in the family used it to get in touch with him.
But last night, Amelia had taken Dennis’s watch away. That was why Kevin couldn’t reach Dennis and ended up calling her instead. This morning, she was the one holding the watch, and when Kevin called again, she just declined it like nothing happened.
Amelia kept her tone light and calm. “Maybe Dennis just didn’t see it. Why not wait until he gets home this afternoon and talk to him then?”
Kevin slapped his hand onto his knee, frustrated. “I think he’s still mad at me. He won’t forgive me.”
Amelia pretended to be surprised. “Really? He seemed totally fine last night. I don’t think he’s upset, Grandpa. Maybe just wait until he’s back from school?”
Kevin let out a long, tired sigh. “There are some things only I understand.”
His voice was rough and tired. “He probably won’t forgive me so easily. Now he’s not even answering my calls.”
Amelia, wrapped in a thin sweater, had her hand in her pocket, fingers curled around Dennis’s phone watch.
She pressed her lips together. “Is that really it?”
Kevin looked down, his face impossible to read. “He’s just a kid. Maybe I was wrong. Maybe I shouldn’t have treated him that way.”
Amelia paused for a second, her eyes lingering on the top of his head.
Was it just her, or did his hair look even whiter than it did yesterday?
She lowered her gaze, her voice gentle. “Grandpa, why are you saying that? You never used to think this way.”
