My Great Escape Led Me to You (Emily Blair) novel Chapter 160

Elizabeth Wilson let out a sigh. “I’m serious, Emily. The Lane family’s got money, sure, but I never imagined the kinds of things they’d get up to. All that drama and scandal—guess that’s just life in the world of the ultra-rich. Way beyond anything I could ever wrap my head around.”

She gave Emily Blair’s shoulder a sympathetic pat. “At least you got out when you did. Otherwise, I’d have started to think Andrew Lane was keeping you around as his mistress or something.”

Emily replayed Elizabeth’s words in her mind, momentarily stunned.

Then she couldn’t help but laugh. “Come on, that’s ridiculous. There’s no way that would ever happen.”

In her previous life, before Andrew Lane got back together with Isabella Austin, she really had been Andrew’s secret lover for a while—a part of her past she’d rather forget. But once Andrew and Isabella reconciled, he cut her off completely. She’d gone months, even a year, without seeing him—sometimes she could barely remember what he looked like.

Now, with Andrew and Isabella getting engaged, there was no chance of anything between them. That chapter was permanently closed.

Emily shook her head. “You’re overthinking it. That’s just not possible.”

Elizabeth wagged her finger, lowering her voice as if she were sharing a secret. “Well, I’m not so sure about that.”

Emily raised an eyebrow. “Meaning what? What are you getting at?”

Elizabeth just shook her head. “Just… keep your distance from Andrew Lane, okay? Don’t let any of them hurt you again.”

Emily didn’t want to dwell on Andrew any longer. She gave a half-hearted nod. “Believe me, I’m doing my best to stay far away.”

The two of them chatted idly, letting the morning drift by in quiet companionship.

Emily leaned back against the tree, arms folded, eyes closed, waiting patiently.

“Arianna George.”

She introduced herself crisply, giving them both a polite nod. “I heard first thing this morning that two strangers had been waiting outside my house. I don’t believe we’ve met. So—what brings you here?”

Nerves fluttered in Emily’s stomach, but she managed to steady her voice. “We do have something we’d like your help with.”

Arianna set down the bucket, pulled a ring of keys from her pocket, and with quick, practiced movements, unlocked the front gate.

The old hinges groaned as she pushed it open.

Her tone cooled a touch. “We don’t know each other. You show up out of the blue and ask for my help—isn’t that a bit presumptuous?”
