My Great Escape Led Me to You (Emily Blair) novel Chapter 233

He called out softly, “Isabella…”

Isabella Austin shot him a glare, her cheeks tinged pink. “Why are you staring at me like that? Haven’t you ever seen a woman before?”

Alex White looked away, a little flustered, and walked over to her bedside. He lowered his voice, “Where’s Andrew? Shouldn’t he be here with you?”

A playful smile curled at Isabella’s lips, her whole face lighting up with a girlish charm. “Andrew will be back any minute. Did you need something from him?”

Alex’s brow furrowed, his irritation with Andrew growing more obvious. “Where did he go, anyway? You’re in this condition, and he just leaves you alone?”

Isabella shrugged off his concern, her tone light. “Andrew’s work keeps him busy. Besides, I’m fine—I don’t need someone hovering over me all the time. He’ll be back soon.”

The light in Alex’s eyes dimmed, his smile strained. “Is that so?”

A dull ache throbbed in his chest, but he forced a smile. “By the way, I never did ask—have you and Andrew set a date for the engagement party?”

At that, Isabella’s expression faltered. She shook her head slowly. “So much has happened lately… We haven’t had time to talk about it.”

Alex frowned again. “You can’t keep putting it off. You’re already starting to show—if you wait too long, you’ll have trouble finding a wedding dress that fits. You really need to set a date soon.”

Isabella nodded softly. “I know. I trust Andrew—he won’t let me down.”

Alex’s frustration finally broke through. “Andrew Lane, honestly. He lets you get pregnant before the wedding—does he even care what people might say? He just gets to waltz around like nothing happened.”

He didn’t notice how Isabella’s smile faded, her face growing pale.

Under the blanket, Isabella curled her hands into tight fists.

She spoke quietly, “Andrew promised he’d be a good father. That’s enough for me.”

Alex was about to argue when his phone buzzed in his pocket, cutting him off.

He glanced at the caller ID, frowning. “Isabella, I need to take this. I’ll be right back.”

She nodded. “Go ahead.”

Isabella cradled the charm, beaming with satisfaction. She hummed playfully, “Wouldn’t you like to know? Let’s just say I have my ways.”

Carefully, she tucked the charm into her pocket, then rested her hand on Andrew’s arm, her laughter light and sincere. “Thank you, Andrew. Really. I’ll be back on my feet soon, I promise. Don’t worry about me.”

Andrew’s features softened, his gaze gentle as he replied with a quiet, “Alright.”

While they were talking, Alex reappeared in the doorway. The moment he spotted Isabella’s hand resting on Andrew’s arm, his expression darkened.

Isabella’s cheeks flushed and she quickly pulled her hand away.

Alex’s mood was written all over his face—he looked ready for a fight as he stared Andrew down. “Andrew Lane, step outside. I need a word with you.”

Isabella sensed trouble and objected, “Alex, can’t you just say it here?”

But Alex shot her down. “No. I need to talk to him alone.”

Andrew was already getting to his feet, following Alex out the door. Isabella could only watch them go, concern flickering in her eyes.
