My Great Escape Led Me to You (Emily Blair) novel Chapter 455

Elizabeth Wilson stared blankly at the portable fan in her hands. “Where did this come from?”

Emily Blair jerked her chin in Tristan Davis’s direction. “He bought it.”

Elizabeth immediately turned, suspicion sharpening her gaze as she fixed it on Tristan. “Where did you buy it? And only one? I checked everywhere and they were all sold out. How did you manage to get one? Besides, all the stores have hiked up their prices—one of these costs almost fifty dollars now.”

Emily glanced over, lowering her voice. “Is that true?”

Elizabeth nodded emphatically. “Absolutely. I just checked a few minutes ago. No way I was going to let those shops rip me off, so I walked right out.”

Tristan’s expression tightened for a second, his tone clipped. “I just happened to run into a kind shop owner who sold me one. Is there a problem?”

Yeah, right. That would be a miracle.

When he’d checked the stores, even the street vendors were completely sold out. In the end, he’d had to buy from a tourist who’d already snagged one.

That tourist had the nerve to ask for a hundred and twenty dollars.

Tristan swore to himself—he only agreed to pay that ridiculous price because Emily Blair looked about ready to pass out from the heat. It had absolutely nothing to do with anything else.

Elizabeth still looked skeptical. “Is that so? I don’t buy it…”

Tristan frowned. “Can we drop this? Where are we going next?”

Elizabeth’s eyes narrowed. “Mr. Davis, don’t you think it’s odd? Why did you only buy one? And even stranger—you don’t use it yourself, you just hand it to Emily Blair when it’s this hot?”

Tristan scowled. “I’m not hot. Emily was nearly fainting from the heat, so I gave it to her.”

Elizabeth’s gaze was glued to Tristan, her eyes drifting pointedly to the tips of his ears.

Tristan’s ears always turned red when he was flustered—a dead giveaway.

He frowned, about to tell her to quit staring, when Emily suddenly cut in, “Let’s just head back, okay? It’s way too hot out here, I’m ready to drop. Besides, my grandmother’s alone at the hotel and I’m worried about her.”

At the mention of her grandmother, Elizabeth finally tore her scrutiny away from Tristan’s ears. “You’re right, let’s get going.”
