If her past self could see her now, Emily Blair thought hazily, she’d probably be overjoyed—truly happy to see how far she’d come.
If her daughter from that previous life were still here, with the wealth and security Emily had built, she would never have let her child want for anything. Her one and only daughter would have grown up safe and comfortable, inheriting everything Emily had, never again left hungry and gaunt, never again unable to afford something as basic as a bottle of milk.
Lost in these thoughts, Emily was startled by a knock at her office door.
“Come in.”
She gathered herself, masking the flicker of pain and confusion in her eyes, and sat up straight in her chair.
Sadie entered in her usual pencil skirt and blazer, composed as always. Her voice was calm, measured. “Ms. Blair, Starlight Innovations just sent a reply.”
Emily nodded. “Go ahead.”
Sadie said, “Mr. Rodriguez from Starlight Innovations said he doesn’t have the final say on this. He told me we’ll have to talk to RivenI&A’s Mr. Lane. Apparently, Mr. Rodriguez has already reached out to Mr. Lane several times, but he’s been tied up… no time to respond.”
Emily had heard plenty about Andrew Lane over the years through industry circles.
She’d heard that Andrew Lane and Isabella Austin had a son; that they’d thrown the wedding of the decade back in her first year of college, a lavish affair that left everyone talking; that their marriage was the very picture of happiness; that Andrew Lane’s business empire now stretched across the globe and nothing seemed able to slow him down. She’d heard he’d founded a charity in Isabella and their son’s name, and had even organized a grand piano competition just for her.
For years, Emily hadn’t cared to dwell on any of it. She’d gone out of her way to avoid crossing paths with Andrew Lane—even when she was desperate for investors, she had never once considered knocking on his door.
Emily, Andrew, Isabella—three names that, though sharing the same industry, had never intersected. They were lines running parallel, always distant.
Now, thinking back, Emily realized it had been a long, long time since she’d heard Andrew Lane’s name or even thought about him.
Recently, her attention had been consumed by the licensing for an important asset in her company’s upcoming video game—a beloved character called Black-and-White Bunny.
Black-and-White Bunny was a wildly popular property, and if Emily wanted the rights, she had to go through Starlight Innovations. Mr. Rodriguez, their managing director, had been negotiating with her, promising her personally that he’d make the collaboration happen.
It was a routine matter, nothing she’d worried about. She’d delegated it to her team.
But now, hearing Andrew Lane’s name and company in this context, Emily froze for a heartbeat before collecting herself and asking coolly, “What exactly happened?”
By all rights, the license for Black-and-White Bunny should have been with Mr. Rodriguez at Starlight Innovations. Why was Andrew Lane involved?
