A sudden wave of irritation washed over Emily Blair—not at Tristan Davis, but at the thought of having to meet Andrew Lane.
Her expression hardened, which was rare for her. She turned away, her voice cold. “I don’t know what’s going through your head. I already told you—I can handle this myself.”
But to Tristan, that frosty look meant something else entirely. Hurt and frustration flashed across his face. He clenched his jaw, unable to hide the sting in his words. “Am I bothering you? Am I just meddling too much?”
Emily’s brow furrowed. “No, that’s not it. I just meant—”
He cut her off with a bitter laugh. “Of course you want to go alone. Heaven forbid I come with you and get in the way of you and Andrew Lane rekindling things, right?”
She stared at him, almost certain she’d misheard. “What did you just say?”
Tristan gripped the back of her chair and yanked it around so she was facing him. He leaned down, arms braced on either side of her, boxing her in—his eyes dark and angry, looming over her.
His voice was ice. “What, did I say something wrong? The second you heard Andrew Lane wanted to see you, you cleared your whole schedule for him.”
Anger and jealousy twisted his words, spilling out before he could stop them. “Emily, are you really that desperate? Is Andrew Lane some paragon of a man? Even after he got married, you still can’t let him go?”
Emily’s fury erupted. “Tristan, do you even hear yourself right now?”
He jerked his hands off the chair, grabbing her shoulders, desperate now. “Am I wrong? Why do you have to see him? What is it about him? Do you still love him that much?”
Her hand stung from the blow, she’d hit him so hard. Anger throbbed in her chest; her breath came in short, ragged bursts. She glared at him, teeth clenched, nearly sick with fury.
“I have no idea what goes on in your head, but this—this is too much,” she spat.
Tristan said nothing, staring at the floor.
A red mark blossomed on his pale cheek, stark and unmistakable. Seeing it only made Emily’s anger flare hotter.
“Get out,” she said, her voice icy and cold. “Now.”
