How could it possibly just be about having a meal together?
Andrew Lane had been raised by Kevin Lane, and if Andrew was known for being cunning, Kevin was even more so.
Word was, ever since Isabella Austin started her maternity leave, she’d been living at the Lane Estate. If she ever returned there, it would certainly stir up trouble. With Isabella’s temperament, there was no way she’d let things slide without making someone’s life difficult.
Emily Blair clenched her fists.
The license for “Black & White Rabbit” was crucial for Vertex International’s upcoming game.
She was done running away.
This was something she’d have to face, sooner or later.
Emily drew a slow breath and spoke up. “When?”
Andrew replied, “You pick the time.”
He watched her steadily, his dark eyes deep and unreadable. Emily let out her breath in silence and nodded.
“All right. I’ll set something up soon.”
Andrew finally released her hand, leaning back against his chair, his voice low. “Good. I’ll be waiting.”
Emily managed a faint smile. “Okay. See you then.”
Andrew gestured for her to go ahead.
She picked up her phone and bag, nodded a silent farewell, and turned to leave.
Outside, Emily found the driver waiting by the curb. She paused by the car door, rubbing the back of her neck and exhaling softly.
She reached for the handle, slipped inside without looking, and leaned her head back, eyes closed. “Take me back to the office,” she said.
As soon as she snatched the bag away, Tristan covered his face with both hands.
She smacked him lightly with her bag. “Say something.”
Tristan squirmed, then parted his fingers a little, revealing those deep blue eyes, watching her warily. “I snuck out. I’ve been waiting in the car this whole time—I didn’t go in or interrupt you.”
He lowered his hands, glancing at her with even more caution. “You’re not mad, are you?”
Emily rolled her eyes and looked away. “What about Xavier? Wasn’t he supposed to be watching you?”
Tristan carefully set the bag on the right-hand seat, then slid closer, stopping just a few inches away, trying to win her over. “I talked Xavier into leaving. Please don’t have him babysit me again—he’s too easy to fool.”
Emily clicked her tongue. “Look who’s talking.”
Tristan edged even closer, craning his head to look at her, eyes full of nervous hope. “Don’t be mad, okay? I listened to you—I didn’t follow you in, and I waited here just like you asked.”
