My Great Escape Led Me to You (Emily Blair) novel Chapter 545

A little boy?

Emily Blair’s heart skipped a beat. She turned and exchanged a glance with Tristan Davis.

Scanning the noisy crowd, she asked again, cautious, “What color clothes was the little boy wearing?”

The bodyguard, busy watching over her daughter, barely spared a glance as he replied, “Didn’t see.”

Emily fell silent for a moment, then reached up to brush a leaf from her daughter's hair.

The crowd was a chaotic mess, voices overlapping in a confusion of noise. Emily couldn’t see clearly, nor could she make out what people were saying.

Her daughter glanced back at her, lips pursed in a pout. “I haven’t even seen the panda yet. This is so annoying. Did you see it?”

Emily shook her head.

Her daughter sighed. “All right, I guess we’ll just have to wait a little longer.”

She tugged at Emily’s sleeve, pleading, “Will you wait with me? Please?”

Emily pressed her lips together, about to nod, when a sudden commotion exploded from within the crowd.

“Stop pushing! Someone’s about to fall!”

“He fell! A kid just fell—call for help!”

“Oh my god, he really fell!”

Emily’s brow furrowed.

Her daughter mumbled, “So what if he falls? There’s a panda in there, it’s not like it’s going to eat him.”

Emily’s fingers twitched.

Pandas might look gentle and adorable, but no matter how cute, they were still wild animals. Even an adult wouldn’t stand a chance against one, let alone a child.

“Let’s go take a look,” Tristan suggested.

Emily turned to him. He reached out to gently ruffle her hair.

She nodded and stood, quickly making her way toward the throng.

It took effort to push through the crowd, but Emily finally reached the edge of the viewing platform. Tristan stood protectively behind her, arms loosely outstretched to shield her from the press of people.

Emily gripped the railing and followed the crowd’s gaze downward.

Sure enough, there was a child dangling from the edge of the platform, hands clutching a thick vine. The vine was straining under the boy’s weight, swinging in the open space halfway down.

Adults on the platform stretched out their arms, but the boy was out of reach—and so was the vine.

His legs kicked wildly in midair. Directly below him, a full-grown panda was looking up in curiosity.

It was Dennis Lane. There was no mistaking him.

Even from a distance, Emily could see his face, ghostly pale, round eyes wide with terror. He was screaming, mouth open in a wail as fat tears streamed down his cheeks.

Emily’s expression was complicated.

The vine would hold for now, but not for long. Soon it would snap, and Dennis would fall.

Even if the panda didn’t hurt him, the platform was high. A fall from that height would not end well.

Around her, the crowd was splitting up—some stayed at the railing, frantically debating what to do, while others ran off in search of zoo staff. Voices rose and fell, all focused on saving Dennis Lane.

Emily stood at the edge, lips pressed tight.

She should be glad.
