My Great Escape Led Me to You (Emily Blair) novel Chapter 549

Each word landed like a stone, and Mr. Parker’s expression darkened by degrees—not with anger, but with something closer to embarrassment, even shame.

Emily Blair understood perfectly when to offer a balm after a blow.

“I have faith in your integrity, Mr. Parker,” she said, her voice gentle. “And I trust you won’t let anyone’s words cloud your judgment.”

Mr. Parker nodded, a little too quickly. “Yes, I understand what you mean.”

Emily offered a small, reassuring smile. “I realize my presence here might be intruding on you and your daughter. I’m sorry for that. Once you finish your investigation, I won’t trouble you again.”

She reached into her coat pocket and handed him a business card.

“This has my personal number. If you come to any conclusions, I’d appreciate it if you could let me know.”

He took the card and nodded. “Of course. You have my word.”

Just as Emily was about to rise from her chair, a familiar voice called out.

“Mr. Parker, Emily—you’re both here too?”

Emily looked up to see Andrew Lane approaching, his son Dennis in his arms. Isabella Austin walked beside him, her eyes red-rimmed and brimming with sorrow.

Mr. Parker turned and finally noticed the trio. Having just discussed Isabella with Emily moments before, he now felt awkward and grasped for words. “Mr. Lane. Ms. Austin. What a coincidence.”

Emily pressed her lips together in a polite smile and said quietly to Mr. Parker, “I’ll be on my way, then.”

He blinked, as if caught off guard, but quickly nodded. “Of course.”

But, as always, someone wouldn’t let Emily leave so easily.
