Emily Blair’s mind was foggy, the world reduced to a single, piercing scream echoing in her ears.
Suddenly, strong arms wrapped around her waist, pulling her into a warm, comforting embrace.
She shook her head, gasping for breath. “Wh-who…who is it?”
“Emily Blair.”
The familiar voice hit her like a jolt, ringing through her confusion.
Blinking hard, Emily forced herself to look up, squinting to make out the man’s face leaning over her.
“…Andrew Lane?”
His grip on her waist tightened. “Is this how you take care of yourself, Emily?”
Emily drew a shaky breath, lowering her eyes and biting her lip. “Can you…can you take me to a hospital?”
Andrew stared at the back of her head, his gaze growing darker. “Didn’t you say you wouldn’t leave?”
She reached out, clinging to his sleeve with trembling fingers. “I…I really don’t feel well…”
The next moment, Andrew’s hand gently tilted her chin up, his eyes heavy as they searched her face.
“What happened?”
She could feel the effects of the drug intensifying, her words stumbling out. “Someone…I was drugged…”
“Who did it?”
Emily hesitated, then shook her head. “I don’t know.”
Without another word, Andrew took her wrist. “I’m taking you to the hospital.”
“Stop right there!”
Andrew’s jaw tightened. His tone was cold. “She’s been drugged. I’m taking her to the hospital.”
Cynthia, her mind steeped in melodramatic romance novels—not to mention the string of wild accusations Isabella had just fed her about Emily—immediately jumped in.
“Drugged? What do you mean, drugged?” Cynthia’s voice was sharp with suspicion. “She’s faking it. She just wants your sympathy.”
Emily looked up at her with bleary, unfocused eyes, but she couldn’t keep the gaze and dropped her head again.
Cynthia caught the look and her eyes widened. “See? She’s only looking at me because I saw through her little act. Mr. Lane, don’t let her fool you. Isabella’s right here!”
She shoved Isabella toward Andrew.
Isabella looked lost for a moment. “Andrew…”
Andrew glanced down at her. “Be good. I’ll take her to the hospital and be right back.”
