With Old Mr. Forrester's arrival, all talk of divorce was abruptly cut short.
Candice watched as he led Rebekah and Benjamin away. She gripped the bedsheets so tightly her knuckles turned white, biting her lip until she drew blood. That senile old fool! Why was he so fixated on a worthless bitch like Rebekah? She had been so close to getting everything she wanted!
Clearly, she needed to take more drastic measures.
Her phone rang, and she answered it. A man's anxious voice came through the line. "Candice, someone went to Sylvan Wilde's place."
A flash of panic crossed Candice's face. "But they've already left The Capital, haven't they? Who was it?"
"Sylvan called me. He said someone was asking about the hit-and-run. He repeated the same story he gave the police and managed to send them away, but the risk of exposure has just gone up."
Candice's hands clenched into fists. "Find out who it was. And if necessary, make sure they don't get a chance to talk."
"Understood."
After hanging up, Candice's sweet features twisted into a venomous scowl. She wouldn't let anyone ruin her plans.
…
Rebekah and Benjamin were summoned to Old Mr. Forrester's study. His first command was for Benjamin to apologize to Rebekah.
Benjamin refused. "Grandfather, you don't need to concern yourself with my marriage to Rebekah."
"Can you promise me you won't divorce him?"
Rebekah knew he wasn't telling her the whole truth. She lowered her gaze, feigning sorrow. "Grandfather, you know how much I love Benjamin. Of course I don't want a divorce. But if he insists, what can I do?"
Her words gave Old Mr. Forrester the opening he needed. He smiled. "Don't worry, Rebekah. No matter how old that boy gets, he's still my grandson. As long as you agree not to divorce, I'll handle him."
Rebekah said nothing, her silence a tacit agreement.
Old Mr. Forrester coughed twice, then changed the subject.
