The three of them stepped inside. Rebekah had expected someone like Grant to live in a messy apartment, but while the place was small and rundown, it was surprisingly clean. Even the empty liquor bottles were arranged in a disorderly pile on the living room's only table.
They each pulled up a plastic stool and sat down. Grant sat at the table, his gaze eventually landing on Rebekah.
"Was it you who paid for my parents' medical bills?" he asked.
Rebekah nodded. After the incident at the university, she had contacted a doctor she knew and covered all of Yvonne's parents' expenses. While she was at it, she'd learned about their conditions. One had kidney failure, the other dementia, and they were in different hospitals. It was then that she realized how difficult it must have been for Grant to manage their medical bills and his own living costs all these years. That was why she had paid for everything. Most of the million she had won at the exchange conference was gone.
Grant lowered his head, his gaze shifting away. "Thank you."
"I came here today to ask you about something," Rebekah said, changing the subject. "Five months ago, there was a serious hit-and-run on the mountain road. You were there, weren't you?"
"No."
Grant's denial was instantaneous, coming the second the words left her mouth. It was sharp and fast. Rebekah was still forming her next sentence when his reply cut her off.
Mason spoke up. "Why deny it so quickly? Miss Fletcher only said five months ago. She didn't even mention a specific date. How can you be so sure you weren't there?"
Grant's face paled, and a look of fear crossed his eyes. "I've never witnessed a car crash. No matter what day it was, I wasn't there."
A chill ran down Grant's spine. Jensen's intense stare made the hairs on his arms stand up.
"You caused that scene at the anniversary because someone was forcing you to," Jensen continued. "Let me guess… was it Candice?"
Grant's face grew even paler. He looked at Jensen and felt as if he were facing a king who could see right through him, waiting for him to confess.
Rebekah also watched Grant, waiting. She had her suspicions, but she wanted to hear the truth from his own lips.
Grant looked away from Jensen, glanced at Rebekah, and let out a long, internal sigh. "It was her."
