Before he could finish, Shawn's mocking voice cut in sharply. "How could she be a miracle worker? She can't even cook properly! A woman who barely finished school? She only got to be a doctor because my dad pulled some strings. She's a fraud! If you want to thank someone, thank my dad!"
The childish words were like a knife twisting in her gut.
Rebekah couldn't believe Shawn would say such a thing. Every step she had taken to become a department head in medicine had been through her own hard work. She hadn't relied on Benjamin for anything.
Rebekah looked at Shawn, her voice cold. "I became a doctor through my own abilities. Have you ever once seen me at work?"
She could tolerate Shawn’s insults about anything else, but she would not let him slander her professional integrity.
Seeing her cold expression, Shawn felt a flicker of fear. But it was quickly replaced by disgust. How could an uneducated woman possibly become a doctor? His mother was so vain. She was nothing like the honest and generous Aunt Candice.
"All you care about is Dad's money and power. You barely went to school, so how could you be a doctor? You think you're Aunt Candice, who's both educated and brilliant?"
Hortensia shot Rebekah a disdainful look. "Useless waste of space. Just because my son got you a job at the hospital, you think you're a real doctor? What a disgrace!"
Benjamin frowned at Rebekah, his voice sharp. "That's enough! Isn't this embarrassing enough already? Do you have to broadcast the fact that you got your job through connections to the whole world?"
Benjamin was frustrated. He could tolerate her tantrums at home, but he would not let her embarrass him in public. His words sealed her fate, branding her a nepotism hire.
