"I told you, it wasn't me!"
But no matter how much she protested, her parents were convinced she had stolen another woman's boyfriend. Rebekah couldn't help but think back to the eighteen years she had been mistaken for their daughter. They had been good to her then, but after Candice returned, they treated all that past kindness as a debt owed to their real daughter. In the years since, they had become increasingly harsh, twisting even her basic character into something ugly.
Rebekah was tired. If the people who were once her closest family could change so completely, there was nothing left for her to hold onto.
Her gaze dropped, her voice devoid of emotion. "Since you don't believe me, let's sever our ties. From this day forward, I am no longer a part of the Fletcher family."
Her mother laughed, a cruel, sharp sound. "Rebekah, you stole eighteen years of Candice's life. The moment she came back, you stopped being a Fletcher."
"But you still need to repay us for the money and effort we wasted on you for those eighteen years," she continued venomously. "And you have to atone for your sins against Candice. Until you do, you can never leave this family!"
It was always the same accusation. Yes, she had occupied Candice's place for eighteen years, but she was just an infant when the switch happened. How could she have known she was an imposter?
Eight years ago, Keith had abandoned her to marry Candice. Eight years later, Benjamin had crippled her to advance Candice's dance career. And in all the years in between, her adoptive parents had relentlessly suppressed her. Hadn't that been enough repayment?
Sienna looked at Rebekah with contempt. "You fake. You enjoyed my sister-in-law's life for over a decade and even tried to marry my brother. If Candice hadn't come back, our family would have been completely deceived by you! And now you're trying to steal my boyfriend? You have absolutely no shame!"
The more Sienna spoke, the angrier she became, pleading with her mother to do something.
