Before she could process his words, Benjamin shoved her onto the bed. Her eyes met his, and she saw the raw anger and desire churning within them. Her heart hammered against her ribs. He was serious.
She began to struggle. "Benjamin, are you crazy? Let me go!"
His hand went to the buttons of her shirt, the anger in his eyes giving way to lust. He ignored her struggles, burying his face in the crook of her neck.
Rebekah's expression turned to ice. The more desperate the situation, the calmer she became. Her hand slipped into her pocket, her fingers closing around the small penknife she used for sharpening pencils. Ever since her traumatic time in prison, she had made a habit of carrying something sharp for self-defense.
Suddenly, a loud crash came from the doorway, startling them both.
Rebekah turned her head. A shattered glass lay on the floor, milk pooling around it. Candice stood in the doorway, her face a mask of embarrassment.
"Candice," Benjamin said, his voice laced with panic.
"I'm so sorry! I didn't mean to interrupt!" she cried out, then turned and fled, a glint of tears in her eyes as she disappeared down the hall.
Benjamin forgot all about Rebekah. He scrambled off the bed and chased after Candice.
Rebekah quickly got up, wiping the tears from her eyes before hurrying to her own room and locking the door. The Benjamin she had just seen was terrifying. She had to finish what she started and get out of this house.
Just then, her phone rang. It was Quentin.
Her eyes shimmered with tears, her face a portrait of betrayal. "Benjamin, have you fallen in love with Rebekah?"
"Of course not, I…" he started to explain, but the words caught in his throat. He had always loved Candice. He had only married Rebekah to ensure Candice could marry the man she loved, and to get Rebekah out of the Fletcher family so she wouldn't stand in Candice's way. But now… Rebekah was still his wife. He couldn't just abandon her.
Seeing his hesitation, Candice let out a bitter laugh. "You're just trying to humiliate me, aren't you? I confessed my feelings to you, and not only did you reject me, but you immediately went to sleep with Rebekah. Is it because I've been married before? Am I not good enough for you now?"
Tears streamed down her face as she spoke. Benjamin's heart twisted. He pulled her into his arms.
"I'm sorry, Candice, I never meant to humiliate you. I admit I have strong feelings for you, but your sister… she can't live without me. Please, Candice, try to understand."
