Chapter 90

Meanwhile, Aiden was still downstairs talking with James when he glanced at his wristwatch.
“Arthur is taking too long in the room. I’ll go check on him,” he muttered, standing up.
He climbed the stairs, walking down the hallway, when he saw Sofia standing there. Her face was a mess, her lip swollen, her eyes bruised, her posture unsteady.
Aiden froze, frowning. He hadn’t realized the extent of her injuries yesterday. Damn it… Cassia really did a number on her. A part of him wondered if he hadn’t intervened last night, would Sofia have been left half- dead on the floor?
“Aiden…” Sofia whispered, taking a shaky step toward him.
His eyes softened, just a little. Pity flickered through them as he scanned her swollen face. “How are you feeling? Have you taken anything for the pain? Why isn’t your wolf healing?” he asked.
At that, she burst into tears and suddenly threw herself into his arms.
Aiden stiffened. His first instinct was to push her away, but instead he stood still, arms hovering awkwardly at his sides, his wolf snarling in protest at her touch. He did not hug her back.
“My entire body hurts,” she sobbed. “Amelia, she attacked me last night. Every part of me aches, I feel pain everywhere…”
Aiden’s jaw tightened. He let out a slow breath, guilt nudging at him, even though his wolf raged at Sofia’s words. “I’m sorry,” he murmured, patting her back stiffly, before pulling her away.
“I didn’t do anything wrong, I swear,” Sofia continued, her voice trembling. “She didn’t know how to use the kitchen appliances, and no maids were around. I tried to help her and to show her, but she just got angry. She hit me, Aiden. She started fighting me. I didn’t fight back…I remembered what you told me, to be nice to her. All I did was try to be nice…” Her tears streamed faster, lips trembling as she spoke.
Aiden stood speechless, torn between disbelief and the echo of Cassia’s fiery glare last night. He finally spoke, his voice flat. “You should see the doctor, Sofia. You don’t want those wounds to get infected.”
“No…” She staggered suddenly, her body tilting back as though she might collapse.
“Sofia?” Aiden caught her quickly, holding her upright. “Are you okay?”
“I–I don’t know. My eyes feel blurry. Please… take me to my room.”
Without hesitation, Aiden swept her up in his arms and carried her to her bedroom. He placed her gently on the bed, straightening to leave, when her hand shot out and grabbed his.
“Stay with me, please,” she whispered.
Aiden turned back, frowning. “You need to rest. I’ll call the maids to bring you medicine…”
“No,” she cut him off, her grip tightening. “I want you to stay.”
He shook his head, patience thinning. “Sofia…”
Before he could finish, she pressed her hand against his lips, silencing him. With her other hand, she grabbed the collar of his shirt and yanked him closer, crashing her lips against his.

“Then why marry me?” she whispered, her voice hoarse. “Why marry me when you knew your heart belonged to her?”
