“You’ve always been closed off, and I accept it, but this is too much even from you.” I ignore my mother’s voice as I focus on my exercise. She keeps walking back and forth as I change my routine.
“You are hardly sleeping or eating. It’s unhealthy. We should have dinner tonight.”
“I’m fine, Mom,” I growl, annoyed at her.
“It’s been a week since your mate has been in a coma. You don’t talk about her to anyone. How do you feel?” she asks.
My family has been on my case since I found my mate at the border, beaten. They are worried about my well–being since I’ve been more closed off than usual.
“I hate that you bottle things inside, Nick. You won’t explode if you vent or communicate your emotions out loud,”
I exhale and drop the dumbbells, and face my dear mother.
“I feel like fucking shit! It’s been a week, and we haven’t found who did that to her. They hurt her… So badly. I hate myself for not being there, that she had to suffer while I didn’t. I FUCKING HATE MYSELF!” I roar. I breathe in and out, feeling like a load has been lifted off me. I run a hand through my hair. My mother smiles at me and slowly opens her arms to me.
“I’m sweaty,” I murmur. Mom pouts and gives me her puppy eyes. I can’t resist hugging her.
After we share a warm embrace, she pulls away from me and looks me dead in the eyes,
“Now, we are having dinner tonight. The whole family will be there. Vicky, too,” she says.
“I’m busy,” I mumble.
“You’re attending,” she says sternly, her eyes not taking refusal. I hesitate, but I nod eventually.
After I managed to escape my family dinner successfully with the help of my brother Lionel, I went to the hospital. My perfect little mate is still in the same position I left her in this morning. The heart monitor reveals how slow and steady her heartbeat is. Like the night before, I stand in the corner of the room, watching her.
Apphia’s pov
I’m tired.
Why am I so tired?
I feel numb
I can’t find the strength to open my eyes or move. I lie there listening to the same sound of beeping.
“He found her near the border, outside the forest,” those unknown voices again. Who are they?

“How did he know?”
“I don’t know, he suddenly startled and got up, heading to the Southwest side. I just followed,”
“… But who is she?”
“I don’t know. He doesn’t know either, but your brother freaked out over her. He mutilated those wolves who were after her,”
“How long has she been in a coma?”
” 7 days, doc says anytime now,” the female voice sighs.
“Do we at least know the pack she’s from?”
“No, maybe she’s a rogue,”
” She doesn’t smell like one, though,”
I’m still in darkness. I don’t know how long it has been, but I hate it. I want the light now.
