Chapter 1

One month after giving birth, Evelyn Winston went alone to the hospital for a postpartum.

check–up.

But to her shock, she was told that she had never been pregnant.

“You think this is funny?” the doctor scolded her coldly. “Do you really believe wasting medical resources like this is acceptable?”

Evelyn, stunned, pulled out her prenatal check–up records from her bag. “But I had all my checkups here, and I delivered my baby at this hospital too. Could there be a mistake in your system?”

The doctor took the documents and scanned them, but his brow furrowed almost immediately.

“The ID number is in the system, but it belongs to someone named Lila Hart. And based on your latest ultrasound, you clearly have no history of childbirth. Are you seriously telling me you can’t feel whether you’ve been pregnant?”

Every word hit Evelyn like a hammer, leaving her dizzy and disoriented.

This couldn’t be real!

She had a C–section. On the day she gave birth, her husband, Matthew Roscente, personally drove her to the hospital. After the anesthesia wore off, he held the baby up for her to see himself.

She still had a clear scar on her abdomen as proof.

And Lila? She was Matthew’s childhood friend who had obsessed over him for ten years. Even after their wedding, Lila couldn’t let go.

Since she couldn’t have him, she once hired thugs to ruin Evelyn. If Evelyn hadn’t stepped in at the last second, Matthew, in his rage, might have killed Lila on the spot.

After that incident, Matthew had sent Lila away. How could she possibly be back now? And why would Matthew book prenatal appointments for her?

Evelyn’s mind spun in chaos.

Every year around July and Augus Matthew got incredibly busy with work. His business trips could last up to two months. That’s why she had come to the hospital alone this time.

Normally, she would have waited patiently for him to return home. But not this time. She couldn’t wait anymore.

She bought the earliest flight to the city where he was supposedly on a business trip. She needed answers, and she needed them now.

But as she walked into the parking garage, she saw Matthew’s black Range Rover driving right past her.

The car stopped just a few meters away. Matthew stepped out and circled to the passenger side.

A slender, elegant hand reached out naturally to loop around his arm. It was Lila.

They looked close, intimate, nothing like the rumors of tension between them.

“Matthew,” Lila said sweetly, “the doctor said I’m healing really well. Why do you keep bringing me to the hospital again and again?”

“You heartless little thing,” Matthew chuckled, brushing a hand over her hair. “Until the doctor tells me personally that you’re okay, how can I relax? The day you gave birth to Kent, you lost so much blood I nearly had a heart attack.”

Kent. That was the nickname Matthew had chosen for their child.

Evelyn instinctively ducked behind a pillar, but when she heard their conversation, she froze. Her eyes reddened instantly.

The child… was Lila’s?

Matthew guided Lila toward the elevator. Her hand slid from his arm down to his waist, brushing against his belt.

“I already asked the doctor,” she whispered in a sultry tone. “I’m more than ready. And you haven’t touched me once since. Matthew, how have you managed to hold back?”

A dark fire lit in Matthew’s eyes, but he caught her wandering hand and held it gently.

“My family always looked down on Evelyn,” he said quietly. “They always wanted me to marry you. But because of her, I pushed you away, and yet you never blamed me.”

“Even after we got married, the Roscente family only accepted Evelyn out of pressure. She came from a low background. Her child wasn’t enough to secure his place as an heir.

But you, even knowing you were terminally ill, still chose to carry a child for me, just to silence the family. You didn’t care about having a name or a title. You just wanted to stay by my side.”

“I did love Evelyn,” he murmured, “but I owe you more. You’ve been with me longer. If I couldn’t control myself now, I’d be no better than an animal.”

Evelyn’s nails dug into her palms, drawing blood. Her heart felt as if someone had torn it out of her

chest.

All these years, she had believed Matthew’s love for her had never changed. But now she realized,

he had been entangled with Lila all along.

On their wedding day, Lila had stormed in and tried to sabotage it, turning Evelyn into a laughingstock. Later, she even sent men to assault her.

Evelyn had cried so hard that night she nearly died trying to protect herself. That trauma haunted her for years in her dreams.

And now, the man who once claimed to love her, dared to say he felt guilty toward the woman who

had hurt her?

He had become one of those who hurt her, without hesitation.

“If Evelyn ever finds out that her pregnancy was just a hallucination caused by your company’s experimental sedatives,” Lila whispered, clinging to him, “and especially that the baby was mine,

she’ll be furious.

I’m scared, Matthew. All I ever wanted was for you to protect our child. As for me, I can live with a little suffering.”

Matthew held her tightly. “Kent will always be her child in name. She will never know the truth.”

He pulled out a contract and handed it to her.

“After she wrongly accused you of hiring people to hurt her, you stayed locked up at home for so

long. It took a toll on your health. You once told me being closer to me would make you feel better. So I arranged a job for you at my friend’s company. You start tomorrow.”

Lila’s eyes sparkled as she looked up at him. “Isn’t his company right next to yours? Can I really be

that close to you?”

“As long as it doesn’t affect Evelyn, I’ll do everything I can to make you happy.”

He walked into the elevator with her.

Evelyn covered her mouth to stifle the sound of her sobs

He once told her, “Evelyn, you are the only one I’ve ever loved. I don’t care about your background. I’ll never let anyone else stand by my side.”

Now, he was the one lying with the woman who had ruined her life, whispering how much he owed

her.

He once said, “No one has the right to access to the Roscente Group, not unless they’re my child.”

And now, using his company’s cutting–edge technology, he had tricked Evelyn into believing she

was pregnant, making her raise her enemy’s child like it was her own.

He had done all this for Lila – faking a pregnancy, stealing her motherhood, and turning her into a

fool.

Could she still bear to call that love?

Evelyn didn’t even know how she made it out of the hospital.

After running three red lights, she set out to do the last two things she had to do.

The first was finding the prenup she had signed with Matthew. It clearly stated that if he ever cheated, their marriage would be immediately dissolved.

She contacted an immigration agency and booked her departure for a month later. She would leave Matthew for good.

The second thing was retrieving a report she had hidden for a long time diagnosis. She placed it in a gift box.

When she first received that report, she had spent countless nights unable to sleep, not knowing how to tell him. Then, miraculously, she found herself pregnant. She thought it was a blessing from above and took extra care throughout the pregnancy, cherishing every moment.
