Claudia lay stiffly in bed, eyes wide open, too angry to sleep.
Ever since they were children, every time they argued, York had only two ways of placating her.
Either he'd sleep with her until she gave in, or he'd buy her a gift.
Even now, when she wanted a divorce, he was still the same.
He was the one who brought it up, and he was the one who refused to talk about it.
The more Claudia thought about it, the angrier she got. She struggled to sit up.
Seeing no reaction from York, she leaned over, using the faint light from the window to see his face.
He was fast asleep, which only infuriated her more.
The next morning, Claudia woke up on the sofa. She went into the bedroom to use the bathroom and found York just finishing up.
"If you're awake, then hurry up and leave," she said coldly, entering the bathroom.
York stood at the sink, watching her reflection in the mirror. "The matriarch of the Grandeur Group is having her eightieth birthday banquet the day after tomorrow. She personally invited you. You have to come back with me."
Claudia turned off the faucet and grabbed a face towel. "I have to work. I don't have time."
York hesitated for a moment. "If you really want to work, I can arrange a position for you at a hospital when we get back. I promise Grandfather won't interfere this time."
Claudia rolled her eyes at him. "York, I'm not going to live my life depending on you anymore, just so you can keep controlling me."
She added, "Just call me when it's time to sign the divorce papers. You're busy enough with your work and taking care of that mother and son. Don't waste any more time on me."
York was getting angry. "Claudia, I came here to take you home because I'm being responsible for our marriage. Don't take this too far. I'm offering you an out; you should take it."
Claudia didn't yield an inch. "From now on, I won't walk any path that has you on it, York. I don't need your 'out'."
She reminded him, "Close the door on your way out."
With a final glance at York, she ignored his attempts to stop her, gathered her things, and left for work.
