"And when she found out about you," Peter continued, "she handled it with grace, tolerating the existence of you and your son. That's a level of class you'll never have."
He looked Ann up and down, adding, "Claudia's beauty is famous in our circle. Now look at you. Is there a single thing about you, from head to toe, that's even remotely impressive?"
Ann lowered her head, biting her lip in shame.
"Ann, here's some advice," Peter said, his voice softening slightly. "You know better than anyone who that child's father is. If you're smart, you'll take the money and disappear. Don't wait until you're left with nothing."
With that, Peter got in his car and drove away.
Ann swayed, steadying herself against a tree on the sidewalk.
What did Peter mean by that last sentence?
Could he also know that Ethan wasn't York's biological son?
Not only did the Ferguson elders look down on her, but even York's own friends held her in contempt.
She couldn't keep relying on York for everything. She had to get a job, become independent.
She had to earn her place by York's side on her own merits and find a way into his world.
She would show him that she, Ann James, was a hundred, a thousand times better than that woman, Claudia Watkins.
Suddenly, she remembered the drawing.
She took out the 'family portrait,' snapped a picture, and posted it to her social media.
The caption read: 'A family portrait my husband and son made together. So happy.'
Several hours later, in Caledon.
Claudia returned to the studio apartment provided by the hospital and immediately called her parents to let them know she was safe.
