Peter looked at York as if he were an idiot. "So you don't like Claudia, you like Ann. That's why you can't see Claudia's pain, and why you believe everything Ann says."
A wave of irritation washed over York again. "Peter, you all talk about liking someone, about feelings, about love. Do you really find it meaningful to waste your time and energy on such intangible things?"
"Didn't you agree to date Ann back then?" Peter shot back. "You saw each other every week. If you weren't talking about feelings and love, what were you doing? Chanting scriptures and preparing to become monks?"
"I admit Ann is the only woman I've ever had real feelings for, and the one I most wanted to marry," York conceded frankly. "And I admit that her return created a huge shock. But love and marriage are not my entire life. Ann was gone for six years. I married Claudia, and we were doing just fine."
Even if he had made impulsive decisions for Ann's sake, he had never considered getting back together with her or destroying his marriage to Claudia.

A week later, in the CEO's office at Ferguson Group.
Mark knocked and entered, placing a folder in front of York. "Mr. Ferguson, we've found out everything."
York closed his laptop and opened the file. "Go on."
Mark laid out the results of the investigation. "Six years ago, three months after arriving in Caledon, Miss James married a man named Virgil Stone, who was a Veridian native living there. She gave birth to their child six months later."
Mark paused briefly before continuing, "From what we gathered through interviews with neighbors and Virgil Stone's relatives, Miss James endured domestic violence for four years, starting not long after the child was born."
"During that time, she suffered three miscarriages as a result of the abuse and developed depression. We've obtained her medical records and case files from the hospital."
