Claudia hadn't thought much of it initially, but Mark's reminder made her hesitate.
York had asked her here to sign divorce papers, yet he was aggressively trying to destroy the evidence of his affair first. When she pushed back, he immediately tried to leave. Something felt wrong.
Just then, Claudia's lawyer, Attorney Chase, stepped forward. "Miss Watkins, it would be best to let Assistant Mark handle the repairs himself. You can simply cover the cost."
With that prompt, Claudia instantly understood.
She handed the phone back to Mark. "You find someone to fix it. I'll pay for it."
Mark hesitated, not taking the phone.
York, who had been silent, finally spoke. "Mark, do as my wife says."
With that, York left the conference room.
About ten minutes later, by a temporary parking spot on the street, Claudia let out a quiet sigh of relief. "Attorney Chase, thank you for the warning back there."
Attorney Chase sighed. "Miss Watkins, in our line of work, we see spouses use every dirty trick in the book to win a divorce case. It's always better to be cautious."
Claudia lowered her gaze, hiding the emotion in her eyes.
When it came to schemes and manipulation, no one could beat York.
She had almost fallen right into his trap in that conference room.
"Claudia."
A man parked his electric scooter and walked toward her with a noticeable limp.
It took Claudia a moment to recognize him. "Lanny?"
It was her cousin from her uncle's side, Lanny Watkins. He'd had polio as a child, which affected his leg, preventing him from finishing school and leading to a modest life. He was, however, an honest and decent man who ran a small phone repair shop with his wife.
