Claudia scoffed. "Weren't you the one who forced me back?"
They stared at each other in silence before York finally let go.
"Don't forget, Claudia, we have an agreement," he said. "You're back now, whether you like it or not. And since you're back, you have to honor it."
Claudia met his gaze calmly. "My family and my career are my bottom line. If I can't even protect that," she said, "then there's no point in living."
She looked him straight in the eye. "Your threats, your schemes, your precious agreement... no matter how powerful they are, they won't work on a dead woman, will they?"
York saw the unwavering resolve in her eyes. His hands gripped her shoulders, his knuckles turning white. He hesitated for a long moment before asking, "Claudia, do you really have to think of me as such a terrible person?"
Claudia shook her head. "You're not terrible. You just don't love me. If you had married Ann, I'm sure you would have been the perfect husband."
York's grip on her shoulders tightened, and he suddenly pulled her close. "I'm trying to talk about our problems," he warned in a low, tense voice. "Don't bring anyone else into this!"
A wave of anger washed over Claudia, and she tore herself from his grasp.
"Why can't I bring her up?" she shot back, her voice rising with each question. "Isn't she the real problem between us? Isn't she the reason our marriage has fallen apart? Didn't you force me into this situation for her? I'm the victim, and I have to face the woman you love. You're the one who did this, so what are you hiding from? Why is it so hard for you to just admit that you love Ann and your son? Why not just tell me you only brought me back to be a prop, a smokescreen to hide your affair?"
