With the crisis averted, the two of them left the press conference. As they walked, Claudia kept her eyes glued to her phone, refreshing her social media feed. York, as usual, wore a cold, unapproachable expression. The driver opened the car door, and Claudia slipped inside.
Meanwhile, in a Capital City influencer agency's dressing room, Ann huddled over her phone, watching the press conference feed.
She saw York standing beside Claudia, clearing up the scandal, and in a fit of rage, she swept every cosmetic item off her vanity. She had thought this would be an easy win. All it would take was a little digging from the press to expose her history with York to the world. But overnight, that bitch Claudia had managed to defuse the whole thing with just a few words.
Watching the way Claudia acted so sweet and loving with York on screen, and the adoring way he looked back at her, Ann tore the headband from her hair in a jealous fury.
She was York's first love, the only woman he had ever truly loved. As long as she was around, that pathetic woman was living on borrowed time.
Staring at her own, increasingly flawless reflection in the mirror, Ann quickly composed herself and dialed York's number.
The black Bentley glided through the streets of Capital City. Claudia and York sat in silence in the spacious back seat, a silence that was shattered by the harsh ringing of a phone. York glanced at the caller ID, then looked over at Claudia. Claudia calmly placed her phone in her purse and zipped it shut. She met his gaze and said, "If you need privacy, I can get out."
Her tone was as light and emotionless as a weather report.
Before he could respond, she instructed the driver to pull over. York's gaze was sharp and complex, as if trying to see right through her, to uncover the true feelings she kept hidden. The luxury car slowed to a stop at the side of the road, and Claudia opened the door. York seemed to hesitate for a second, and by the time he snapped out of it, she already had one foot out of the car.
He hung up the phone and grabbed her wrist. "I hung up," he said. "You don't have to get out."
