That evening, York came home to find Claudia still wasn't back.
Ever since he had known her, Claudia had always been the one waiting for him, no matter the place, no matter the hour.
York grabbed a bottle of wine and knocked on his upstairs neighbor Peter's door.
Peter was lounging on his sofa, casually advising York to calm down.
"Relax," Peter said. "You've got something on her. She can't run away."
York was feeling incredibly stifled. "She's my wife. She came home late last night. I was just worried about her."
Peter laughed.
He asked York, "Where was this worry when Claudia was heartbroken over Ann James and her son? I must have missed it."
Peter's words shut York up completely.
He felt guilty about how he'd treated Claudia regarding Ann and her son. He was trying everything to keep her by his side precisely because he wanted to make it up to her.
It was Claudia who shut him out. She chose not to trust him, refused to even try to understand. Seeing York's silence, Peter said, "Don't think you can do whatever you want just because you've got some screws loose."
York poured Peter a glass of wine and shot him a warning look.
Just then, York's phone, sitting on the coffee table, rang.
Annoyed, he declined the call.
Immediately, a message from Ann popped up.
York glanced at it, then picked up his phone to text back.
