The sudden ringing of the phone in the bedroom pulled York from his thoughts.
It was Wendy, calling to tell him to bring Claudia to the Ferguson Mansion for their family dinner that evening.
York declined.
He explained that from now on, he and Claudia would spend Christmas Eve with the Watkins family and Christmas Day at the Ferguson Mansion.
Wendy didn't argue.
Around noon, while the Watkins family was preparing the holiday dinner, Claudia arrived.
Eddy took the black lockbox from her. "Sis, you got the jewelry back?"
Jessica told her son to put the box in her room.
She then pulled Claudia into the dining room. "Claudia, be honest with me. How did you get this back?"
The money from the sale was still in her possession; she knew her daughter didn't have the funds.
Claudia reassured her parents. "Mom, Dad, York bought it back at a high price."
She didn't tell them that York had actually recovered the jewelry days ago.
Nor did she mention the humiliation she had swallowed, the psychological barriers she had overcome, or the degrading means she had used to get it back from him.
Jessica and Felix exchanged a look but didn't press the issue.
In the afternoon, while Claudia was helping in the kitchen, York arrived at the Watkins' home, carrying a first-aid kit.
Upon seeing him, Eddy stormed off to his room.
Jessica and Felix, though their expressions were strained, didn't turn him away.
In front of Claudia's parents, York maintained his usual humble and polite demeanor. "Mom, Dad, Happy Holidays."
Jessica offered a brief nod before returning to the kitchen; Felix answered with a low grunt as he set the warm bread on the table.
Before York could say anything, Claudia led him into her room.
