Ann's sobs grew more desperate. "I don't want to be thrown on the island! My son is at home waiting for me! York, can you please just take me home first?"
Seeing that York was still hesitating, Ann dropped to her knees. "York, do you really want to watch me die here? I'm begging you, I'm so scared."
Her frantic cries finally brought York back to his senses. Ann was right. With his mother there, Claudia would be fine. To be safe, he needed to get Ann out of there first.
York helped her up. "Let's go. I'll take you home."
He drove Ann to the entrance of her apartment complex but didn't pull in. Ann hesitated before unbuckling her seatbelt. With her hand on the door handle, she turned to him.
"York, I'm the one who dragged you into all this tonight. I'll buy your wife a new dress another day and apologize to her properly."
York was clearly distracted, restlessly tugging at the collar of his shirt. "Just throw the dress out. I'll talk to my wife about her things. You don't need to worry about it."
Ann's eyes flickered. "But I can't do that. It was wrong of me to wear her clothes in the first place. Your wife didn't give me a hard time and even spoke up for me. I have to apologize properly."
York felt suffocated. He lowered both windows, letting in the fresh air.
Seeing him like this, Ann had no choice but to get out of the car.
As she left, she deliberately added, "York, I've realized now that your wife is a very good person. Women are actually quite easy to please, you know. Don't always be so stern. Go home and comfort her. Remember to be gentle. She should be home by now, you should go check on her."
York looked at Ann with a complicated expression. "What I said tonight... it was to stop my grandfather from hurting you and our son again. Don't read too much into it."
