He leaned over, his hands gripping Claudia's shoulders. "Claudia," he said, his voice low and deliberate, "I know you hate Ann. You don't want to see her, and you can't be bothered to deal with her."

They stared at each other in silence for a few seconds.

York finally asked, "Tell me the truth. Why did you have her bring me my medicine, and why did you take her to the restaurant with you?"

Claudia pushed York away and stood up.

She faced him, her tone more serious than he had ever heard it. "York, you're the one who's playing dumb. I'm helping you, and I don't believe for a second you can't see that."

York grabbed the back of her neck, pulling her forcefully toward him.

He looked into her eyes and said, "How many times do I have to tell you? I'm protecting her because I don't want Grandfather to give her and the boy any more trouble. Aside from that child, there's nothing between us. You don't have to take what I said in front of Grandfather that day to heart."

York's explanation was forceful, but Claudia just laughed.

"York," she asked, "is it a fact that you and Ann have a son? And is it true that you will raise that child together until the day you die?"

"During that time," Claudia continued, "you'll do everything to protect and care for them, including giving up your health, your life, your time, your money, your energy. Everything you have already belongs to them. What are you still pretending for with me?"

"You would defy your grandfather, disobey your parents, and betray your marriage for them. The depth of your feelings for Ann is something even I envy. Can you please stop trying to paint yourself as some innocent victim?"

They stared at each other, and a dead silence fell over the room.

The atmosphere was suffocating.

After a long moment, York asked, "Then tell me, what is it you want?"

Claudia laughed at herself. "The moment I do something you don't like, I'm either threatened or thrown in jail. What can I do? What would I dare to do?"

Her nonchalant smile was like a field of burnt ashes.
