"York, don't be angry," she said. "Mrs. Ferguson just missed her grandson and asked me to bring him so she could see him."

York's eyes swept sharply over Ann's face. Then he turned and walked away.

"You stop right there!" Wendy commanded, slamming her water glass down on the table.

York paused and turned back. Ann gave him a pleading look, then half-pulled, half-dragged him into a seat.

Wendy ignored York's increasingly dark expression. "I just heard that Ann's mother had a fight with her brother and sister-in-law and fell ill from the stress. The child was frightened as well. How can you, as his father, be so unconcerned?"

York's brow furrowed. "Mom, can you please not interfere in my affairs?"

"I'd love not to interfere," Wendy retorted. "I told you to resolve this yourself. Have you?"

Seeing the mother and son arguing in front of her, Ann felt increasingly uncomfortable. She mustered her courage and said, "Mrs. Ferguson, you've misunderstood York. He takes very good care of us."

Wendy shot Ann a contemptuous glance. "Ann, is that all the dignity you have left? Your affair has become the talk of the town.
