"I just feel like... they don't look like a couple with no feelings for each other," Laurel said doubtfully.
Ann's chest heaved with suppressed emotion. "As long as they're not divorced, they're still a legally married couple. They share the same social circles. Isn't it normal for them to eat with friends?"
"Has York Ferguson said anything about when he'll bring you and Ethan into the Ferguson family?" Laurel asked.
At this question, Ann's expression shifted. "Mom!" she snapped in frustration. "Don't you know perfectly well whose child Ethan is?"
Laurel fell silent.
"York feels guilty toward me, but he's not an idiot!" Ann continued. "I went through so much just to get him to agree to acknowledge Ethan and promise to help me hide his real identity. Can't you see he already regrets it?"
"The only reason he's sticking to it is because he made me a promise and still feels he owes me. It's just part of his nature. How could I possibly ask for more at a time like this?"
Seeing her daughter so worked up, Laurel quickly moved to calm her down. "Ann, don't worry. Men are all the same—they always want what they can't have. You were his first love. No one can compare to you in his heart."
Ann closed her eyes wearily. She was York's first love, yes. But a first love who had pursued him for a year before he finally agreed to date her. And during their time together, York had been like a monk, completely devoid of any physical desire.
If that hadn't been the case, she wouldn't have had to bide her time abroad for so long, only to return with a desperate, self-destructive plan.
"You finally landed a big fish like him. Don't let him get away," Laurel urged. "The Fergusons are the most powerful family in the capital. How many people ever get a chance like this in their whole life?"
