Looking straight into Claudia’s eyes, York said, “What I did at the restaurant was wrong. I’m sorry.”
Claudia's expression was one of pure shock. In the more than twenty years she had known York, this was the first time she had ever heard him say he was sorry.
She couldn't help but ask, "York, did Ann cheat on you or something?"
His face darkened slightly.
"Claudia, I know you're disappointed in me, and I know you're hurting," he said. "Let's forget all the unhappiness from the past. I won't let Ann make you feel insecure again. Can we just be okay?"
Seeing her frown without a word, York softened his tone. “The Vance family is having a dinner tomorrow night. Come with me.”
It suddenly made sense to Claudia. "So that's it. You just want me there to make you look good, don't you?"
"No," he said, shaking his head. "Everything I've said to you tonight has been from the heart. If you really don't want to go, I won't force you."
"Oh," Claudia said flatly. "Then I'm not going."
York visibly restrained himself from pressing the issue further. He took a small hair tie out of his pocket and held it out to her.
"I saw your old one was broken on the bathroom sink this morning, so I bought you a new one," he said. "It has the bow you like."
Claudia didn't take it.
"York, it's not that I like bows," she said softly. "I liked that hair tie because it was a gift from my York. That's why I cherished it."
York's eyes softened, a flicker of emotion stirring within them.
He murmured her name, "Claudia..."
He knew it. She still had feelings for him.
"But the man standing in front of me now is Ann's lover," she continued, her voice hardening. "He's the father of her child. I can't possibly accept a gift from him."
